I spend tons each month on video games, and I rarely write a review. But, this gem deserves it. I played the demo when it 1st came out and dismissed it. I liked the mechanics, graphics and concept, but I did not feel it was worth it.
I picked this up a few weeks ago and just finished it – WOW. Great story, great game play, great graphics; wonderful all around.
If you are shy of gore, horror and fright; stay away. This game is overloaded with violence and blood. However, there is a reason for all this insanity and when you find out, you will feel ‘right’. You won’t feel as if you are just blasting and blazing away at the alien threat for no reason.
Replay value is great as well, since the achievement seekers will enjoy the multiple time playing through it.
Dead Space has re-sparked my interest and faith in EA and the Survival Horror genre.

I was surprised to see the low average rating for this game (on the PC platform). I’ve played this game through about 5 times now, I’m absolutely addicted. Incidentally, one of my favorite movies is “Aliens” so go figure
Looking forward to DS2 to arrive, too bad we have to wait until next year!! Saw the IGN demo, looks hella cool..

I am not a person who normally enjoys shooters, but of this class of games that are considered RPG-Shooters where you progress through a storyline and customize your gear I consider this the finest.

Dead Space is a game that has achieved instant classic status with me. There’s just no other way to say it. After finishing the game, I came to the realization that the game had me on edge the entire time I was playing. This game really succeeds at sustaining an atmosphere that keeps you on the edge of your seat with the certainty that just around the next corner is something particularly vicious waiting to sink its teeth into your flesh. You are never given a moment’s rest and they really amp the tension up way past what would probably be considered healthy levels.
I’m not one to ruin stories and I’m not making any exceptions here, except to say that this game would appeal to anyone with an appreciation for horror and sci-fi flicks, especially movies that combine the two genres like Aliens, Event Horizon and John Carpenter’s version of The Thing. This game proudly wears its influences on its sleeve and manages to produce something genuinely great out of its many forefathers. The creative team behind this title did their homework and it shows. From the very beginning, I was pretty much glued to the controller.
GRAPHICS: Astounding. One of the things that make this game such an incredible experience is the sheer scale and design of the levels. It has the fusing of metal and flesh aspects of Doom 3, the lighting of Bioshock and levels with large areas like something you’d see in Ninja Gaiden 2. Certain portions of the game have moments where you just have to stop, look around and take it all in because you can just “feel” how large your surroundings are. I don’t know if that makes any sense but I’m sure when you play the game, you’ll know what I mean. The design on the monsters owes a lot to the nasty, tentacle ridden horror flicks of the early 80′s and these critters enjoy popping out of nowhere, screaming and growling. I thought the creatures were really impressive and definitely serve as formidable obstacles in your path to finding out what the hell is going on in the overrun ship the story takes place in.
SOUND: Wow. I may have to go on record as saying that the sound in this game is probably the best I have heard in ANY game to date. If you have surround sound and have been feeling like your speakers haven’t been very active lately, don’t worry because this will probably be your new demo disc when showing off your sound system to any of your pals. This is the kind of game that uses sound mixing and design to make the game even better, creating an incredible atmosphere of fear and tension that like I said before, just doesn’t let up. Whispers, dripping water, wet, squishy sounds coming from the air vent above you, faraway screams, babies and adults crying, chanting, inhuman grunting, moaning, laughter…. all sorts of things that you DON’T want to hear in the dark corridors of a monster infested ship. The weapons sound nice and loud. I honestly believe that the sound in this game is its best and strongest point. Seriously, it would most likely be an injustice to the sound designers to not play this game with a proper surround setup and the volume high up.
GAMEPLAY: Great and fluid controls. Only become a very minor problem when you get crowded by monsters as the close quarters combat isn’t the greatest. Still, not too much to whine about. The inventory and map interface is great, coming up as a digital hologram in real time. Cool moments like bouncing around the walls while in zero-G and being in vacuums add to the game. You upgrade your weapons with power nodes which are very valuable and scattered across the levels. Creatures are dispatched easily when you shoot off their limbs but usually take a lot of hits if you’re just aiming for the body so it lends a whole strategic kind of thing to the mayhem. All of which happens in nice, gory detail.
Bottom line: If you have any desire to feel terror and dread for a good respectable stretch of playtime, look no further. This one pulled no punches and left me freaked out and jumpy on many an occasion. I have absolutely no regrets on picking this up as it earns its “M” rating by delivering a truly scary experience. I have a feeling that this one is gonna be a sleeper hit.

Dead Space is simply just an awesome Survival Horror game and anyone that is a fan of the Survival Horror genre MUST play this game. Actually, Dead Space was the first Survival Horror game that I ever bought and I think that it’s a really good game for someone trying to get into the Survival Horror genre.
To take out the enemies in Dead Space effectively, you must use a system in the game that is called “Strategic Dismemberment”. Basically in Dead Space, you just can’t go for the typical headshot all the time and expect an instant kill, because in Dead Space, shooting an enemy in the head one time will NOT result in a Kill. In Dead Space you must target the limbs (arms and legs) of enemies to effectively take them out.
If you shoot an enemy in the head to blow his head off, usually it will result in the enemy coming towards you even faster and swinging it’s arms around wildly…so in a nutshell, blowing of the heads of enemies make them faster and even more dangerous.
Also, if you take out both legs on an enemy, the enemy will still be alive and still can attack you because he’ll just use his Arms to drag himself towards you and swing at you if he gets close enough. In Dead Space, try to avoid body shots as well because body shots are not really effective either.
In Dead Space, there is an abundance of Save Points, so if you die (you probably wont be dying too much in the game) you wont have to start back from a very long point before you reached the Save Station. I recommend saving the game whenever you see a Save station.
I found that Dead Space really wasn’t really a hard game (I played Dead Space on my first playthrough on Medium Difficulty) and I only died a few times in the game. If you consider yourself pretty good with 3rd person shooters, I recommend that you play Dead Space on Hard Difficulty first because I really didn’t get too much of a challenge from Dead Space on Medium Difficulty, however there were some parts in the game that got a little difficult on Normal Difficulty though during the last couple of chapters.
There are 13 Chapters in Dead Space and each Chapter should take you about a good Hour to complete, however, I think that a few Chapters took me a little over an Hour to complete. I completed Dead Space in a little over 16 hours. If you explore a lot in Dead Space, then I’d say that you should be able to complete Dead Space in about 14-16 hours, but if you just run through the game from point A to point B, you’ll be able to finish the game quicker, however I recommend exploring because there’s plenty of items to be found.
There are a couple of boss battles in Dead Space as well as parts in the game where you play in a particular area in Zero Gravity….there’s even one boss battle that takes place in Zero Gravity.
There are a few puzzles in Dead Space as well, but the majority of them are rather easy to figure out, however there was just one puzzle in the game that really gave me a hard time and took me some time to figure out.
The music in the game works very well in making you feel tense and alert while playing. For anyone that’s interested in the PS3 version, it does have trophies. I highly recommend playing this game with the lights out…. Dead Space, it’s a game not to be missed.

I am 30 years of age and this game had me on edge for the entire ride. I jumped numerous times. I couldn’t believe it kept getting me, but it did! The key is that it doesn’t inundate you with enemies like most games (which kills suspense). You are also rarely ganged up on, which is nice (but you better be ready at ALL times). My only complaint is that the game character is a bit sluggish (compared to Halo 3 for example), but this only adds to the realism. How fast could a person really run around wearing a heavy-duty work suit and wielding a big tool for a weapon after all? And speaking of tools, nearly the entire weapons arsenal is industry tool based (in a distant future of course). I found such an approach to be an awesome (and unique) experience. The sound track is unbelievable and really adds to the intensity and suspense. The graphics are also excellent which of course makes a game like this even more realistic (and scary). The storyline and voice acting are also top-notch. If you are brave enough, turn off the lights, crank up the volume and really let yourself get immersed in the game. If you are not creeped out in short order something is probably wrong with your amygdala. Highly recommended.
Update:
I am increasing this game to just under ‘Masterpiece’ status. Simply an excellent and very fun game. Give EA some business on this one, they really deserve it.

Dead Space is so scary that I am almost afraid to finish it. Actually some parts of the game are scarier than others, just be prepared for a lot of pop-out scares. You will absolutely hate the abominations that try attack you over and over again. The sounds are awesome and violence is gruesome. To me, the most terrifying part of this game is anticipating what is coming next. Not recommended for players with heart problems.

The longer reviews really say it all. I work at Blockbuster (yeah i know
) and i try to recomend this game as often as possible. One of the only games I became instantly die hard for. It really does draw in your attention once you play it for a little while in the dark. Story is awesome, creepy factor is extremely well put throughout the game. Can NOT wait for Dead Space 2, simply put…

Its all been said before but Dead Space is just an amazing experience that seemed to come out of nowhere. I’m not a fan of EA by any means but they really hit this one out of the park. A rare combination of great action and even better atmosphere, delivering genuine chills from start to finish.

From the sight of the first alien creature to final boss, Dead Space has you at the edge of your seat with its non-stop action and its variety of “what the hell is THAT?” moments. The first chapter of this game was very scary, fun, and addicting, but after the first chapter I got the hang of this game like when you turn a corner and a necromorph is right there. Right now Im on chapter 7 so I have still a lot of playing and figuring out how its gonna go. The graphics are the best horror graphics I’ve ever seen. I can’t say anything negative about this game. The sound is the best sound of a game I have ever heard. Its fun never get tired of playing this game. Getting trophies are fun upgrading armor is something you actually want do it will help you through the game a ton easier. Because you can upgrade your rig (health bar) and can upgrade weapons. The bench upgrades things while the store lets u buy suits buy weapons, ammo, and nodes currency for the bench.also try to look through every room and box because you can find semiconductors,or credits (money) or nodes. the zero gravity is pretty fun. The game has an little meter when you press down right stick to tell you where to go so its almost impossible to get stuck. overall this game i a 10/10. DEFINATLY BUY THIS GAME ALL ALL IN ALL!!!!!

It’s rare I write a review for a game. I just got done beating dead space and I feel a strong need to spread the news on how awesome this game is. Before I wrote this review I went and read the single star reviews, because I couldn’t understand how anyone could not like this game. So before considering this game further you need to consider some basic things. Do you like action games? Do you like scary games? Do you like space? Did you like Resident Evil 4? If you answered no to any of those you may end up rating this game as a single star. If you answered yes to most or all of those you should probable get this game. Let me now go into some details.
This game plays a lot like resident evil 4. The variety of feelings you get from the game range from creepy suspense to adrenaline pumping fights. The environments in the game are very well designed and often times very creepy. The enemy design could have used some work but given this game relies on dismemberment as the main way to dispatch enemies there aren’t a whole lot of different ways to take the enemy design. The storyline wasn’t really that impressive but the delivery was very nice. The graphics in this game are excellent aswell as the sound. The mission variety for the game is somewhere in the the middle. You do alot of the same kind of missions traveling around the ship, however from time to time it’s mixed up with something different. The achievements for the game are also very nice, nothing out of the ordinary. The game lasted me around 12 hours on medium, which is short in my opinion, but I intend to go back and the get the achievement which I am guessing will take another 18 or so hours. In conclusion, the game may not have the best story and the graphics may be to par with other games of next generation console; but the game play, the environments, and the variety of missions make this game a must buy.

The game is a cross between Aliens and Event Horizon. Very cool looking game. Very fun to play. The creatures are very unique and there’s a lot of interesting stuff I have never seen in a game before like Zero-gravity combat and dodging astroids off the hull of the ship while trying to keep your air from running out.
I love this game.

If Doom3, Resident Evil 4, Aliens, Half-Life 2, and Prey had a secret baby, Dead Space would be it. This game snuck up on everyone’s radar this season. Not only is this game a competitor for Game of the Year, but it raises the bar of the survivor horror genre. EA has really created a game with a suspenseful and downright scary game through such wonderful level design and overall atmosphere of the world.
The game goes beyond cheap “dog crashing through the window” moments and uses every element of video game narrative storytelling and design to create a game that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The audio design is this game is some of the best I’ve ever heard and adds a whole new dimension of horror and scare.
It’s difficult to discuss the game in more specific detail without giving away much of the plot or surprises that’s to be had. All I can suggest is that through out skepticism and purchase this game. Don’t forget to fire up that 5.1 setup and to play in the dark, if you dare.

I only recently discovered the pleasure of horror themed games. I played Bioshock and ended up buying a number of other titles trying to find something that was as playable, and replayable as Bioshock. I finally found it in Dead Space. What is better is that it plays on Windows 7 64-bit without having to turn off processor cores like had to be done in Bioshock.
The only negative about the game is that you have to have the DVD in the drive when you play it. But that is a far better option than having to be connected to the internet all the time when playing. Those of us in rural areas without broadband thank the game makers that don’t require an internet connection all the time.

This game is truly amazing. It’s basically Resident Evil meets Bioshock- in space. If you like science fiction, and you enjoyed Bioshock and/or the Resident Evil series, you’ll really dig this game. In fact, I’m actually a little nervous about Resident Evil 5… I hope it’s going to be as fun as Dead Space!
This is the sleeper hit of the holiday season! So if you’re looking for something to hold you over till the rest of the A list titles come out, definitely pick this up!

Well, l recently beat the game and have to say that Dead Space is an exceptional title for the PlayStation 3. Everything about this game was phenomenal, from the beautifully haunting environments to the very smart AI, even the lighting was well done! The story is edgy, new, and a refreshment for the survival horror genre. Winner of the Best Action/Adventure game of E3 2008, listed on PlayStation The Official Magazine’s Top 10 of 2008, listed on ZeRiMaRd’s Top 10 of Fall 2008, Dead Space truly is a great next generation title that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish! l highly recommend this title. Thank you EA!

what would sci-fi be if there wasn’t just wee bit of horror involved and this one is full of it. Sure there are lots of peeps that have issues with the DRM/Securom but don’t let that be the only reason to not try this game. I recently bought it at a discount and installed with no problem(did not register the game) and its a hoot to play. Doom in space, except in third person. Takes a bit to get used to, looking over the shoulder, but once u get past that its fun and creepy..

I pre-ordered this game knowing it will be fantastic and very frightening. I love horror movies and horror related anything, but so far I can’t even screw up the courage to put the disk into my PS3! I give it 5 stars based on the reviews here and after seeing the game’s preview on the Sci-Fi Channel. My intension is to come back here and add an actual constructive review on the game. If you don’t hear from me within two weeks to add my adendum, just get off the ship and leave me behind as I didn’t make it. But know that I tried my best. Good luck to us all!

I picked this game up in hopes it could hold me off until Gears 2. It certainly did that, but it also changed my top 5 for the console.
5. Dead Space
4. Bad Company
3. Mass Effect
2. Halo 3
1. Bioshock.
Anyways, this game brings a lot new to the table that you haven’t played before. The gameplay is great and easy to pick up. The storyline was great and kept you on the edge of your seat the whole time. The achievements were a nice addition to the experience. The graphics are some of the best I have seen on the console. The sound to say the least was awesome. Someone said it here that the game knows when to be loud and when to be quiet and that it hits it right on the head.
pros
+ sound
+ graphics
+ gameplay
+ story
+ achieves.
cons
- repetitive missions objectives
- can be a little vague at times
- short ( 7 hours )
Overall: buy this game!

It’s been a long time I have played a good horror since Resident Evil and Fatal Frame series. This game is like a crossup between movie Aliens and resident evil. You started out in a mysterious empty ship IN OUTER SPACE and find out what or why it came to be. The suspense/surprise element is very good, of course if you explore first time around. However, even you did explore the area, you have to worry about your ammo in the game. The ammo in the game is very scarce, even you can by with money, money is also scarce. You need to decide whether fight or flight depending on your condition. The controls are tight and reponsive. The graphics and sound are top notch. The story so far is very good. I am on level 8 when I am writing this review. Too bad there is not enough promotion of this case. This game is actually good!

I’m not much of a gamer, but I really did enjoy this game. The graphics are great, the enrivonment was fun. The story line was very simple, and unlike metal gear solid 4 you play the game the whole time. The variaty in gameplay was fantastic always something new to keep you from getting bored.
NOT a game for kids or hippies. The thing I enjoyed most was the ability to stomp on bloodied corpses and watch a leg fall off, or the head roll away. I thought that was hilarious.

I haven’t had this much fun, and fear, playing a game for a long time. The last time I was this scared playing a game was back with the original Silent Hill. Seems EA have taken some of the best atmospheres of sci-fi/horror movies like Aliens, Event Horizon, and even The Thing to create this game.
Both the music and sound effects (or lack thereof) add a lot to the game’s suspense. Try standing still for a moment and you will hear the sound of a pipe falling, or scurrying steps somewhere above you, or the sound of someone crying in pain, or even a woman softly singing “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.” Don’t even get me started on the haunting whispers you hear.
Do yourself a favor and pick up this game and play it, at night, with the lights off.

THATS RIGHT, IM A HARDCORE FAN OF THE RESIDENT EVIL SERIES AND I REALLY HATE TO SAY THIS BUT DEAD SPACE HAS BUMPED THE RESIDENT EVIL SERIES TO NUMBER 2 ON MY LIST OF BEST SURVIVAL HORROR GAMES. THE GAME IS JUST BEAUTIFUL, THE SOUND IS CREEPY, AND THE STORY IS JUST SCARY! WITHIN MINUTES OF PLAYING THIS GAME I SIMPLY JUST FELL IN LOVE WITH IT. I STARTED PLAYING IT WITH MY LIGHTS OUT, MY ROOM DOOR LOCKED, AND THE VOLUME TURNED A LITTLE HIGH TO SEE HOW MUCH I WOULD GET SCARED. IT DID NOT TAKE LONG BEFORE I DECIDED TO PLAY WITH MY BED LAMP ON SO I WOULD NOT BE THAT SCARED. GET THIS GAME AS SOON AS YOU CAN AND TRUST ME WHEN I SAY THIS, YOU! WILL! GET! YOUR! MONEYS! WORTH! $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I only have a little time to play video games, but I made sure to get this as soon as it came out. I was not disappointed. Sure, the game might not ooze with originality, but with so many games out there, it’s hard to really stand out. Furthermore, the idea of going through the ship looking to repair different compartments does not sound all too exciting. However, this game more than made up for its weaknesses by the awesome graphics, tight and responsive controls, and most of all, it’s ability to keep you tense throughout the whole game. The little creepy sounds here and there and the horribly mutated crew members set you up for one scary experience. There were a few moments in the game where I was just on pins and needles because of the action. I cannot say that many games gave me such an experience… Great game!!

A great game with interesting new game mechanics, including; stasis to slow enemies and obstacles, limb shots instead of head shots, zero gravity and sections in vacuum (including dampened audio etc.) There’s a great backstory an interesting upgrade system and a great inventory system. Frustration is kept to a minimum with frequent save points and auto restarts mid-game.
This is an atmospheric polished game with some unique features. It is marred only sightly by being a little bit resource starved especially on upgrades and by being slightly repetitive including some chapters doubling back on previous chapters (but it’s a cost effective way of getting more gameplay and not a big complaint). The downloadable PS3 Obsidian suit pretty much invalidates the variious suit level finds/purchases and is free in the store. This seemed like a very strange way for the developers to incorporate it in-game.

I just beat this game today at the medium difficulty and was definitely worth the time. There are a decent amount of achievements you’ll get, and there is also some downloadable content available, though I recommend avoiding it because the game plays well as it is (plus guns and armor don’t seem worth the MS points). The graphics and sound are perfect and the lack of a true HUD makes it feel like you are playing a movie at times. The boss fights are challenging but not too hard. The zero gravity and no pressurization zones are fun and there are a few mini games as well. There were a few difficult spots but nothing too crazy. My only complaint is that a few parts got tedious and the turret chair scenes were kind of annoying, though they they don’t really take away from the overall experience. You’ll definitely want to beat it to see how it all plays out. For the price and quality of this game I would say it is a must buy.

If you a want a game that is gory like Gears of War, feels kinda like Resident Evil but more fluid, has a solid story, and is really fun then look no further. And if you are the type of person that would love to be killing hordes of extremely disturbing looking creatures then this is definitely a must buy. Im not gonna write you a book but ill break it down like this:
Graphics-10 (space looks amazing btw)
Sound-10
Story-9 (very engaging)
Controls-8.5
Gore-9.5
All in all great game and you will never need a walkthrough of faq trust me on that.

I got my little brother Dead Space for his X-Box 360 for Christmas. The game ended up spooking him enough so that he was barely able to get past the 2nd chapter, and so he flew it my way to see what I would make of it. The game took me roughly a week to polish off (between work and sleep) and I found a thoroughly frightening game with beautiful graphics and one of the spookiest atmospheres to be found in any horror/survival shooter game. Beware, a few mild spoilers ahead!
Dead Space takes place in the ever far-flung future around a distant planet called Aegis VII on board a derelict mining ship called the Ishimura. It seems that that CEC (Concordance Extraction Corporation), the company which owns and operates that mammoth ship, has lost contact with it. To make matters worse the ship, populated by 1,000 miners, scientists, and ship command types, is transmitting a distress call. So the CEC sends another ship, the CEC Kellion off to Aegis VII to see what’s happening. The Ishimura is an interesting vessel, officially titled a “Planet Cracker”. It cuts away a huge portion of the planetary landscape, pulls it up into orbit, and commences to refining these large chunks of rock into ore. And, predictably, a ship with this capability is going to be, by necessity, a rather large vessel by default.
The Kellion carries a small complement of personnel who are there to find out why the ship went silent and are tasked with repairing it. But shortly after arrival the Kellion crashes inside the landing bay of the Ishimura due to a malfunction of the guidance control. Among the personnel on the Kellion is Isaac Clarke, the story’s protaganist, and the guy you’ll be playing as. Seems Isaac has a girlfriend on the Ishimura named Nicole, and Nicole sent him a strange little video before the ship went offline. Isaac also happens to be an engineer, and he has a real knack for taking existing mining tools and weapons and “upgrading” them to make them very palatable for use as weapons. From the time the Kellion crashes in the Ishimura’s landing bay you’ll know that something has gone horribly awry because the ship seems to be deserted. By the end of the first hour of play you’ll wish it *was* deserted and filled with anything *but* the nasties that now inhabit it. By the time Chapter 8 rolled around (there are 12 total) all I wanted was to go home. I did not want to be on this ship at all and the feeling of constant dread that accompanies the game really amps up the fear factor considerably and in turn makes it that much more viscerally enjoyable.
Dead Space isn’t a FPS but rather a Third-Person Shooter (like Tomb Raider). The view the player has is over Isaac’s right shoulder, which is a bit unusual in a game of this type. There are numerous weapons for use by the player, starting with the basic Plasma Cutter (a mining tool) to the Pulse Rifle (a military assault rifle) on up to flamethrowers and a nasty little weapon called the Ripper, which teleports a circular sawblade out about 10 feet where it hovers (and in turn shreds) any mutants that happen to be standing there. All weapons have a secondary fire mode. The Plasma Cutter can swivel 90 degrees allowing you better “cutting” angles for severing limbs off of baddies, while the Line Gun can fire off a mine which deals blast damage to any monsters standing in its radius. In addition to this Isaac gets a nifty little item called a Stasis Module, which can dramatically slow down moving objects (including monsters) so that they can be bypassed or taken apart at the player’s leisure. Isaac also wears a specialized suit called a RIG, with armor plates and visual aids which let the player know his current health and how much juice he has for his Stasis Module. If all else fails Isaac can use two melee attacks, one in which he stomps his rather large, armored boot on the ground (which destroys little swarming enemies) and one in which he swings a big ol’ haymaker at his opponent using his weapon. It’s a lot to keep track of, but after the first chapter or two much of it becomes second nature.
From the get go Dead Space makes you feel very alone. The Ishimura is a *huge* ship and it is filled with hundreds of nooks and crannies potentially filled with monsters that want to dismember you piece by piece. And the monsters (named Necromorphs) are actually dead members of the original crew. And since there were originally 1,000+ crew this means a whole pile of monsters. Necromorphs come in several varieties. The most common are former humans whose arms have been transformed into stabbing weapons with long spikes where the hands used to be, while others were transformed from infants who like to crawl on walls and shoot long range barbs at you. Others have been absorbed into the ship itself and blast explosive, sentient tentacle beasts in your direction. Early in the story you’re separated from your compatriots and have to work entirely alone to repair the ship and bring its basic systems back online, and Necromorphs will drop in to visit at typically the worst possible times. There were moments in the game where I audibly yelped in surprise at my TV screen as a Necromorph dropped from the air vent above me, depositing a bundle of undead nastiness right in front of me. The game is loaded with moments of this type and I found I was unable to play more than 3-4 hours at a time because it was simply too much for my nerves to handle. This isn’t helped by the ambient atmosphere, filled with sounds of metal clanging below you, or air vents hissing above. You’re constantly looking around to see where the next attack is going to come, even when none does.
The graphics for the game are really pretty and the Ishimura reminds me a great deal of the Nostromo from the movie Alien with its “used future” look. There’s no doubt this is intentional and fans of Alien will probably react with the same degree of paranoia and fear inside the Ishimura. At various points around the ship the player can stock up on supplies from Stores, sort of an electronic vending machine, as well as Power Nodes, which are the critical component used to upgrade weapons and armor for use on the Work Bench. Enemies routinely drop ammunition and money (possibly what their previously living human incarnations were carrying at the time of their…necromorphing). By far the most precious commodity are the Power Nodes, and collecting them becomes a pastime of its own. They don’t drop from monsters (except for one or two bosses) and can only be found in power boxes located sporadically throughout the ship, as well as being purchased for hefty sums from the Store. But even the humble Plasma Cutter can be come a customized killing machine if it is upgraded enough (the P.C. became my weapon of choice as a direct result of it).
Dead Space also separates itself from the rest of the horror/shooter genre by including two very unique spins on the basic theme. The first is to be found in Zero-G operations. Newtonian physics, monsters, and loaded guns always make for an interesting experience, and the Zero-G segments tend to come across as a puzzle of sorts loaded with adrenaline. The second nuance is that there are numerous spots on the Ishimura where the hull is exposed to open space and requires that you use a finite source of oxygen in your suit. Once the O2 runs out so does your life. One can carry small oxygen canisters around with them, but they take up valuable space and when one isn’t sure when these airless episodes are coming one may be disinclined to carry them. Fortunatley the player can upgrade the amount of air their RIG carries by upgrading it at the Work Bench using the aforementioned Power Nodes.
Deep Space draws from many sources, but at the end of the day I was amazed at how very close in flavor it was to System Shock 2. In fact one can put the plotlines for both games side by side and say they’re almost the same game, just with different names, monsters, and a few added bells and whistles to Dead Space. The plot for both involves a lone player tackling on a crew transformed after death and tackling a biological entity which controls the whole collective. Both plots involve a ship that is slowly turning into a biological organism and which have a device of some sort which instigates the whole problem in the first place (Shodan in SS2, the Marker in Dead Space). Both involve betrayal from trusted friends and sometimes even helping your enemies a bit when your purpose temporarily is in line with their goals. And both contain video and audio logs of deceased crewmembers providing hints on how to beat the Great Opponent, as well as backstory. However to say that Dead Space is a remake of System Shock 2 is a bit unfair to it too because many games have given nods to SS2 (Doom 3, Bioshock, and several others) in very similar ways. Dead Space also takes a healthy heap of atmosphere from movies like Event Horizon, the aforementioned Alien, Aliens, and yes, even a pinch from Night of the Living Dead. Thus I would sum up by saying that Dead Space is really a fusion of the best these games and movies have to offer presented to the player in a very cinematic way. It’s literally like starring in your own sci-fi/horror film. And there may just be a moment that comes along and makes you soil yourself, as the title of my review indicates. Fortunately this didn’t happen to me (like I’d admit it!) but I will say that when my dog came up behind me and put her cold, wet nose on my ankle at 2am I jumped 3 feet in the air. Now that, my friends, is a game!
For the price Dead Space *cannot* be beaten. For a paltry $20 this is a horror/survival game that very much is worth every penny you’ll pay for it. If you loved the System Shock series, Bioshock, Doom, Aliens versus Predator (PC games), and the like then you will want this game on your shelf. Now, off to go find a fresh pair of drawers.

This game is hands down one of the most captivating and thrilling experiences I have had on xbox 360. From the initial cinematic to the amazing graphics and sound direction, this is how a survival horror game should be done. I do agree that in many cases the game is TOO scary, to the point where I had to take a break because the adrenaline was running for too long and I couldn’t take it anymore. However, hook this game up to some great surround sound, on a nice big HDTV and sit back in awe at how immersed you are in the game. This is hands down the best use of surround sound I’ve encountered in a game. At the greatest hits price its a steal and worth a try for anyone.

What is fear? Is it the hopeless dread of watching your ammo counter hit 0 as hordes of Mutated creatures limp towards you? Or is it peering down a corridor drenched in blood, and seeing a silhouette of something on the other side flee and disappear. Whatever your personal definition of “Fear” may be, It doesent matter, because nobody is going to save you..
That is the exact point that Dead Space is planting. There is no hope, only you, and a fight for survival. You’ll be stepping into the suit of Isaac Clarke, an Engineer who is sent on a routine maintenence mission aboard the Ishimura, a giant mining vessel that digs into planets. All hope is now lost, something attacks your crew, while you flee down a Steam covered, flashing corridor. This is where the game draws you in, and it NEVER let me go. Looking back, all I could really remember from that moment was the distant screams of my Squad mates, something chasing me from behind, and if I looked at what it was, then I wouldent have lived to recollect it.
Dead Space should undoubtedly be commemorated for its environment and serine but spooky atmosphere. Its the type of Game that makes you look to the left and gaze out a window at a beautiful planet, then look to the right and see a man ripped in half.
Scares abound everywhere. I was looking for a game that gave me some very good jumps, and boy have I found it. The Necromorphs are an entirely different breed of enemy I have ever seen. They require an approach called “Tactical Dismemberment” to be brought down. If you go for the typical “Aim for the head” approach, you may just be wasting your ammo. The Necromorphs can also hand you your face on a silver platter, and the worst part? They know they can to. They will use Tactics to Feign death, and group up to outnumber you. They are faster, Stronger, and certainly at more of a Quantity, the only advantage you have, is that you have a gun.
Which leads me to this, Isaac. He may look like an unstoppable killing machine within his suit, but that is definitely not the case. I love that they made him look cool, but that he’s still vulnerable.
Now then, your HUD. There is none, your entire HUD is either on Isaac’s body or on a weapon he is holding. The Developers made an excellent design choice there, because it doesent clutter your view, and it makes the game just more breathtaking to look at.
Like most Survival Horror titles, Lighting is the name of the game. Its some of the best lighting I have ever seen, and its just marvelous to watch the geometry of the environment cast shadows off of Isaac’s suit.
The sound design practically made the experience. This is a game that should beg to be played in 5:1 Surround Sound. The wails of the Necromorphs as they lurk towards you is expertly done.
In short, Dead Space is a wonderfully atmospheric, and frankly, A Pretty freaking scary game. It borrows some of the best things from titles as: “The Thing, Aliens, Event Horizon, and Resident Evil 4″ but it constantly improves on them. If your a fan of Horror games, and you want an excellent story, with some killer combat and some genuinely terrifying scares, give Dead Space a look because it deserves it.

I haven’t been this stressed out while playing a game since I played Silent Hill or Resident Evil way back when. If you’re a fan of the movie Event Horizon and you love the Alien quadrilogy then you’ll love this game. It’s creepy and disturbing, and you just don’t know what will pop out or where or when. There are strange noises and sometimes sudden loud noises when all is quiet. You’ll hear intermittent whispers so slight you’re not sure if you heard them at all.
Graphics are great but not awesome like some of the newer games. But the storyline and playability completely make up for it. Experimenting with different guns, along with their primary and secondary weapon abilities, is lots of fun. A possible spoiler note: you cannot kill the “enemies” with an initial shot to the body. Interesting strategy they threw in. Controls are not difficult.
A few of the images may be disturbing and gory to some. Though if you are a big fan of the Zombie genre like I am and of the previously mentioned movies then it shouldn’t bother you. It actually plays out (storyline with cut scenes) like a SciFi Horror movie.
Edge-of-your-seat awesome game overall.

If this isn’t game of the year…..I want the game that gets that award. Great graphics, excellent story line, and it’s freakin scary!!!! I loved every minute of this game. The story line is pretty original, and in a world where FPS seem to dominate the baseline of good games, the third person point of view is not only refreshing but adds to the eerie feeling of the story. I highly recommend this game.

I am a huge horror fan and this is one of my favorites. It has everything; atmosphere, creatures, interesting weapons, and blood. The atmosphere is good because you are on a broken down ship in space with things trying to kill you and it gets dark in some parts so it adds to the tension. The creatures are insane to look at and of course kill. There are some that crawl, run, and some that when you kill them will spawn other enemies that will try and kill you. The weapons are tools you find lying around that are used for cutting, which is good because the enemies will not die unless you cut then up into little pieces. That is why this game has blood, a lot of blood. So any horror fan should play this game.

This game is soooooooo unbelievably awesome. It’s one of the best Monster/Zombie type shooter games there is. Take the movies/Games: Alien, Event Horizon, Resident Evil, & Silent Hill, stick them in a blender, and out will come Dead Space.
Everything that annoyed you about Silent Hill & Resident Evil, doesn’t even remotely exist in this game. You’ll get so deep into the story, and looking around, concentrating on what’s where, then out of nowhere, something this jump up, scream and scare the living crap out of you.
It really makes you fee like you’re IN the game!
In my opinion, there are 3 games for PS3 that make it worth having a PS3: LittleBigPlanet, Dead Space, & PAIN!
For anyone who is looking for a gift for someone who likes zombies, shooters, aliens, monsters or WHATEVER… no need to think about it. This will be the best thing they got for their PS3.

What can I say about Dead Space? They did everything right when making a survival horror game, and didn’t go and turn it into another action game with horror elements. Nearly everything about Dead Space is perfect. You have excellent graphics, one of the best soundtracks to set the atmosphere, a story with a slight twist at the end, and even some fun trophies to go for. I took a chance with buying Dead Space before I even played it, but after seeing one gameplay video, I was sure I’d made the right choice.
You play as Isaac Clarke, an engineer aboard a ship out in space with just a few other people. Once you go to investigate another ship, all hell breaks loose. Within minutes of entering the ship, blood thirsty monsters/aliens/zombies (you find out later what they are) attack your party, and you’re left to get out of there while getting to the bottom of what happened and why. It seems that everyone aboard the ship is dead, what with all the dead bodies and crew logs stating who’s deceased, but there’s someone else onboard who wants you to stay.
While the game’s very much survival-based, there’s some action to it, since you’ll be blasting enemies to pieces, literally. Until you upgrade your weapons a lot, you’ll have to shoot off the monsters’ limbs. Yeah, just shooting them in the head or body isn’t gonna work here. Each weapon has a secondary attack mode- your main weapon, the Plasma Cutter, being able to shoot rounds vertically and horizontally, so one way is good for legs and the other for arms or tentacles. There aren’t a lot of other weapons, but enough to add variety and be practical. Isaac can carry 4 at a time, and you switch using the d-pad. If an enemy manages to grab you, mash the X button until you get a cool scene of Isaac bashing them aside, or lose your head. Your inventory is also limited, though as you progress and upgrade your armor, you can carry more. There’s also a Safe system where you can move items from your inventory to a Safe located at any Store found on the ship. These are spread out quite a bit, and often times you’ll be needing to conserve ammo and health packs as a result.
Like I said, nearly everything here is perfect. Get this- if you click the right thumbstick in, Isaac will project a blue light that guides you to your next objective at any point in the game. This sounds like it’ll make things easier, but just because he shows a path doesn’t mean that it’s safe, and a lot of the time there’ll be hordes of monsters coming after you. What’s great about the enemies is that they never, ever pop out of nowhere like in other games. They use the vents in the ship to travel, and if you see a vent somewhere, there’s a chance that they’ll get you through there, or use it to get the drop on you from another one. I got surprised a few times when they used that tactic, and got to enjoy a number of unique death scenes. And trust me when I say that there are A LOT of different death animations for Isaac. There’s not much music, but more ambiance that makes you wonder what’s going on in any given room. There’s always a sound of some kind, sometimes the ship, sometimes a creature near or far. I love it.
The only problems I have with this game that almost bumped it down to 4 stars are that it’s not that challenging, even on ‘Impossible’ difficulty, I wanted the game to go on longer than it was (I beat it in about 10 hours on the first play through), and of course the turret scenes. I personally hate turret parts in games because of how forced they seem, and how they ruin the flow of things. That tradition continues here, and everyone that complains about it has the right to because of how random it is. Luckily, there are only two of these areas, one being where you shoot asteroids and the other being an enemy fight, but they’re so annoying! I hope the turrets are gone in Dead Space 2. Watching a video of them before playing the game, they didn’t look too bad, but once I actually got there, I realized that all the complaints weren’t kidding. Oh, I do also have to say that the wall creatures have one of the most annoying voices ever. They weren’t scary, just plain annoying- so much that I’d turn the sound down whenever I’d see or hear them. They do this stupid sound any time they attack, and they attack a lot. Argh!
Dead Space was the first non-downloadable game I beat for the ps3 and I loved every minute of it [that didn't have a turret]. Had I owned a ps3 when the game first came out, I would’ve bought it for full price back then- it’s that good. Please buy this game new and support it so we can get more quality titles like this! Dead Space has the unfortunate luck of being more popular to buy used, so the developers aren’t getting anything out of it. Here’s hoping for more from this excellent franchise.

Ever since i have gotten Dead Space, i can’t stop playing it. Everything about the game is amazing. The graphics, the design, the environment, everything!
The enemies are my favorite part. They aren’t just some random alien a person made off the top of their head. Each enemy is one of your crew mates and they are each unique. Each one needs to be killed differently.
Next thing is the environment. The makers really made you feel alone in the environment. You are all by yourself on a ship in space. the graphics made the environment what it really is. They emphasize the creepiness.
This is a game for people who like being scared. I recommend it to anyone who is at least 15 years old.

I just made the transfer from PC gaming to console gaming (again), and I picked up this title along with Resident Evil 5 and Haze. I can say that I don’t want to play anything else except Dead Space. Graphics are great, story is great, lots of upgrades, dark, close quarters combat, etc, all things I love in a game. EA did an excellent job, and you can tell people worked hard on this game. EA has taken a hit in the market recently, but I hope they continue to make quality games like this. As far as the other two titles I bought, forget about Haze; lost interest in ten minutes. I’m a big Resident Evil fan, but I’m not crazy about this last one. It’s OK, but graphics, and especially gameplay cannot compare to Dead Space. Good job EA!

A simplification but a high compliment at the same time, Dead Space indeed does play similarly to Resident Evil 4 right down to the over-the-shoulder camera angle, alien organisms using and modifying human bodies, and purchasing upgrades and replenishing ammo and equipment via a vendor.
That being said, Dead Space stands alone just fine and a science fiction survival adventure. I purchased an Xbox 360 only a few weeks ago (having owned a PS3 for over a year) and this is the first game that I took to right away and played to completion.
You play a very tough character equipped with a RIG (body armor/spacesuit) and various powerful and destructive tool-weapons with which to dispense various alien monsters. The enemies aren’t usually overwhelming. You can maintain steady progress by balancing the use of your weapons and special abilities: kinetic force (telekinesis) and time stasis. I felt the balance of challenge and progression was just right for me on normal difficulty.
Solid gameplay aside, there are some excellent realistic science fiction elements. The game takes place on an enormous mining vessel (like the BBC show Red Dwarf). There are different points when you need to accomplish specific tasks like: restarting the engines and gravity generators, jumping around in zero-G, and untethering a large asteroid. These are all a big bonus to the avid sci-fi reader.
Overall the game has quite a bit going for the player: gameplay, setting, cinematics, sound, and graphics and I recommend it.

I wasn’t sure about a game based on fear, playing in the dark, zero gravity, etc. It sounded like more work than I wanted in a game. I played BioShock and the game was dark and hard to find my way around. But this game blew me away. The graphics were AWESOME! The background music sets you on edge the whole time you’re playing. And the zero gravity is a really cool part of the game. The bosses are challenging and you really feel like you’ve accomplished something when you make it past the next one. Game play was fairly long for me, but I took my time and enjoyed every minute of it. The final boss is unbelievable, and I loved how they ended the game. It sets up a good sequel.
Overall this is a game well worth getting. The price is definitely right at this point, but I would’ve paid full price for this game. Prepare to fight for your life!

This is an amazing game. Graphics, storyline, gameplay, are all top notch. What really sets it apart from anything else, however, is the atmosphere. I really recommend having a 5 speaker surround sound setup to truly enjoy all the vibe this game has to offer.

I will admit that I at first avoided this game, not sure of what to expect. I saw quite a few favorable reviews (especially from gamers), but I remained hesitant and wasn’t particularly impressed with the demo. Someone finally talked me into getting it, and I have to say it far surpassed my expectations! This is absolutely the best “horror” game I’ve played on the PS3. The visuals are solid, not on par with the best the PS3 has to offer but pretty good nonetheless. I noticed a little bit of slowdown when a lot was happening on screen, however. The physics were effective, but at times seemed a bit off to me. I felt the gameplay was excellent, with only a couple of nitpicks (the tourret sequences, for example). The developers deserve major kudos for the clever manner in which HUD, objective and item information was integrated. Dead Space may have a few minor flaws, but then again what game doesn’t. For setting, story, creepiness and infusing just the right level of tension, I would have to recommend this one as a must play and can’t wait for Dead Space 2!

This is a really great game. I was weary of getting Dead Space since the setting did not excite me (a lifeless ship out in space) but EA Games did an excellent job of creating 12 very unique levels that offer a great variety of surroundings. Of course the ship is full of life, it’s just alien and not too friendly.
Well I’m now playing it through for the fourth time, which is pretty unusual for me. Play it alone at night and you’ll get your heart rate going. The music enhances the effects like the soundtrack of Psycho and eerie ambient sounds will have your muscles tense and your adrenaline going. Creatures jump out and attack or silently creep at you from behind until you turn to find them in your face.
This game has a masterfully woven combination of great graphic details, excellent sounds and music, diverse environments, a variety of alien incarnations, challenging boss battles, clever puzzles, and a unique space motif that has you fighting in a variety of environments against human corpses morphed into morbid and deadly aliens. There are ample weapons to choose from and each can be enhanced and upgraded. The nature of the game forces you to preserve ammunition and learn how to maximize the unique advantages of each weapon in your arsenal.
One of the more unique aspects is the zero gravity environments where you can jump to any surface, turning every wall or ceiling into a ground surface orientation. Another exciting arena is fighting in the vacuum of space where you not only have a limited supply of oxygen but there is no sound, beyond your labored breathing, to alert you to an alien creeping up on you.
I cannot say enough to stress my recommendation. I just wish there were more games as robust as this that offers so many hours of play and replay. Obviously a lot of effort has been put into this game and as a consequence it won’t disappoint.
PS
Play through once and on your second round, your given, among other things, the “Military Suit” (aka “Level 6 Suit”) as a bonus. That alone is ample incentive because you can finally look like a badass.

Your heart is racing. Your teeth are clenched. “It’s just a little further” you convince yourself, “I can make it”. By the skin of your teeth you’ve completed your final objective for the current mission. Now you’re headed back to the tram station-and to safety. But there are still more corridors to traverse, more treacherous rooms to cross before you can get there. Will your current, depleted stock of ammo hold out? Will the last blip of health registering on the back your rig be enough to save you just one more time? What sort of foul abomination lurks around the next corner? How about the one after? Welcome to the USG Ishimura. Welcome, to “Dead Space”.
If you’ve ever wanted to experience first-hand the sheer terror that Ellen Ripley must’ve felt as she raced through the darkly lit corridors of the Nostromo-steam erupting all around her and klaxon sirens wailing in her ears, this is the game for you. Ridley Scott himself couldn’t have constructed a better immersive experience-one absolutely brimming with atmosphere, tension, suspense and horror. This game really puts you there-mind, body and soul, right into the heart of things better than any other game that has come before it.
Dead Space is a game of epic scale. The USG Ishimura is simply a huge ship. It’s not just the Ishimura you’ll be traversing either. In order to complete many of the numerous objectives the game has to offer, you’ll be going outside of the ship as well into zero gravity areas. There are vacuums too, and like everywhere else in the game-these areas are filled with taut suspense. A meager supply of air is all you have at your disposal and the counter on your back ticks it away by the second. If you don’t move-your death is imminent.
Outside of the tension filled game play, Dead Space’s most striking quality is its graphics. Even taking BioShock and Gears of War into consideration, I have never seen a more drop dead gorgeous game on the Xbox 360. This one is a stunner even on a 19″ analog television. The production values are simply off the charts. Every room, every corridor, every creature and human character alike-is rendered in stunning detail. Keen attention was obviously paid to lighting and atmosphere and a complete sense of environment. And unlike many other games, there’s not one inconsistent section during its 12+ hour duration. Everything in the game looks like it belongs to the universe that was created for it. It sounds amazing too with footsteps that clang on metal, creatures that wail and scratch off in the distance, and tense mood music to boot.
The only gripes I had with Dead Space were very minor. For instance-the game can be insanely frustrating at times when you find yourself suddenly locked in a room with precious little ammo and are simply bombarded with a horde of creatures and creature types all at once. There’s another frustrating section where your avatar Isaac is required to hop into a gunner’s seat and shoot down a series of asteroids. This bit in particular was hair-pullingly difficult and aggravating and really brought the pace of the game to a crashing halt. There’s a bit of poorly designed aiming control to consider too during the occasional fights with wall tentacles and during your final face off with a giant beastie. Completing these segments in particular seemed to be more about luck than skill-and that’s just poor game design. These quips are not enough to really ding the game for too much though-since everything else is about Dead Space is stellar. Plus its an absolute blast to play. Dead Space is a top tier game all around and definitely game of the year material.

This game is just awesome. If you have a ps3/360, heck even Wii now that Extraction is out, and haven’t played it yet, you are certainly missing out! I rented it a while back and loved it. Played thru two times completely, then partially after that, to get most of the achievements
… Now I am ordering it because I am longing for more! I can’t wait for Dead Space 2!! And if you like this game, the same company (Visceral Games) will be releasing Dante’s Inferno (based on the books Divine Comedy) soon so check it out! That game has 7 circles of hell! (Gluttony, Lust, etc)

I played the game on normal and fell in love. The gameplay is awesome and the details to the ship rock! Everything is in detail and ammo conservation is important when playing on any setting setting. The abbility to slow your enemy and then beat them is awesome having to break off their lims but its never just 1 comming at you. I have jumped several times while playing which no other game has made me do. Their are plenty of DLC contents on the market place but its just weapons, outfits and different collors for your outfit and guns.
When you beat the game, you can play it again on the same setting with what you have at the end of the game but you cannot start a harder setting with all the items you have. Dont worry becuase in the end, you have pleny to stuff and money to buy whatever you need to get. At the end of me playing on the hardest setting, right before the last boss, i bought 2 more weapons, I fully upgraded them and bought plenty of ammo.
Some other cool featers is to slow time, air conservation when you walk out into space, moving objects from far away and your health can all be upgraded for better performance.
Enjoy the game and a hard 1K acheivements score

Too bad people hate the DRM so much and it’s too bad that EA feels the need to over-protect their games because this game, if you ever get to play it, is awesome! It is also truly terrifying. I played through the game once, and then tried on impossible mode and I rarely want to replay games. The storyline is interesting and creative. In all that time, it only crashed once, which, if you do a lot of gaming, is pretty impressive. Around every corner was either creatures trying to kill you or some demented cut scene, but the cut scenes are actually in the gameplay. It’s just a really well done horror action survival game in my opinion. It blows away anything the Resident Evil series had to offer. Similar to Doom 3, but by no means follows the same storyline and is way more messed up. Doom 3 was nerve racking, but this game will give you nightmares.

In the deepest regions of space, aboard a disabled mining ship, a new dimension of terror has been discovered. In the new game Dead Space, E.A. has crafted a truly gripping and immersive game that is truly frightening to play.
Cast as engineer Isaac Clarke, you and your crew arrive for routine repairs to a remote mining ship, the Ishimura. The docking procedures do not go as planned and Clarke and his team find themselves trapped aboard the ishimura, and if this was not bad enough, something has gone horribly wrong aboard the mining ship.
Very shortly into the game, Clarke becomes separated from his team, and under siege from a series of bizarre and deadly creatures that infest the station. Armed with a simple plasma cutter weapon, Clarke must not only survive the aliens that roam the station but he must complete several tasks such as restoring the ships tram service and unblocking vital areas of the ship.
As the story unfolds, Clarke is able to upgrade his arsenal through the collection and use of power nodes, and through collecting credits, is able to purchase new weapons such as military grade rifles and flamethrowers to fight off the Necromorphs.
Clarke is able to keep in touch with his team through the game thanks to the com system which allows for a holographic display to appear before the player. For those who do not want to have to stand in place to watch the messages, you can move around the ship and still watch the messages as the screen will travel with you as you move.
Players will also be able to gain access to various crew logs as well which will help fill in the back story of what happened aboard the Ishimura prior to your arrival.
The game has plenty of challenges moments aside from the deadly creatures as low gravity and zero air locales present new challenges that players will have to overcome.
In a very shrewd move, simply pumping several rounds into an enemy is not enough to bring them down, as they will develop new limbs and vulnerable areas as the game unfolds which forces players to adapt their combat style to an ever changing enemy. Players also have a stasis option which allows them to momentarily slow objects and creatures in order to pass them or gain a strategic advantage. Players also gain other skills as the game unfolds such as the ability to move large objects via a special option on the weapons.
Another nice feature is allowing players have numerous save stations throughout the levels which thankfully does not force players to repeat tough areas of the game trying to reach a needed checkpoint in order to save progress.
The game also has a great inventory system which allows players to use their health packs, examine their weapon and ammunition options, as well as see what is in their inventory.
The game does offer an automap via the display in the suit, but I at times find this tricky as I was not able to keep the map engaged and open doors, and with multi level sections, I at times become lost trying to discern if I should go up, down, or around in a new area.
I could not get over how immersive the game was as the designers are to be highly praised for crafting a game where you clearly have a sense of dread and are worried about things popping out of nowhere. I am not the easiest person to scare and on more than one occasion in the game, I found myself on edge thanks to the sounds and settings of the game, and also thanks to an enemy that appears often out of nowhere. During one early stage of the game, I was watching a set of machines operate after completing a repair. Since I had cleared the room earlier, I thought I was safe, so you can image my surprise when I was concentrating on a control board only to find a deadly claw appear over my shoulder with no warning or sound.
The story cleverly combines the best of science fiction and horror and reminded me of “Alien”, “The Thing” and “Event Horizon”, but not in a way that seemed to copy any of the films. The visuals of the game were amazing, as so much detail was paid to the look and layout of the ship. As I walked the dark and dangerous corridors, I was ever alert to the grids, vents, doorways, and shadows where my next attacker could appear at any time without warning.
The audio quality of the game is also a huge feature of the game as the clever use of sounds such as clattering metal, doors opening, and more are used to infuse a sense of dread into players, as well as keep you on edge as on more than once occasion I whirled in the direction of a sound ready to fight the unknown only to find that my enemies were waiting elsewhere.
Playing on the Playstation 3 system I was happy to see that the game was dual shock enabled and using the Dual shock 3 control allowed me for a new level of enjoyment thanks to the rumble features of the game which added a new dimension to the gritty combat of the game.
Rarely do I find a game that not only delivers a compelling and scary story with solid action and graphics as was the case with Dead Space which is simply one of the best games I have ever played and is destined to become a classic.
5 stars out of 5.
Rated M for Intense Action and Carnage.

This game is by far one of the best games I have ever played. I never got bored of this game played it twice on impossible mode and still enjoyed it. Storyline is interesting and missions are exciting. With resident evil 4 and 5 I found myself bored because missions became repetitive and nothing seem extraordinary and worst of all the had no horror in it. Modern resident evil should not be consider a horror genre, more of third-person shooter game. But DEAD SPACE stays true to the horror genre. You’ll get more of a chill with this game than resident evil so Buy THIS GAME!

The cover of the game itself makes me shiver, but when you get in the game be prepared for gory bloody action. Dead Space reminds me a lot of Silent Hill, why? Well in Dead Space things just come out of nowhere, you can hear the screams and the cries, but nobody is there.
The creator of this game was very creative, and decided to give everyone a scare. The graphics are beautiful, and the sound is great. The game has 12 chapters, if you think it’s short, it’s not. Each chapter is about an hour or more long, leaving you enough time to think about if you could handle the scare. Unlike other horror games, this one is a bit easy, the ammo is dropped by the vicious aliens and life can be bought at the store.
To wrap this all up, Dead Space is a wonderful game, and it has everything a good horror game should have, great graphics, sound , and a good scare. This is a must-buy for ALL horror fans.

Without a doubt the scariest game I have ever played.
Turn down the light, turn out the sound, and get sucked into the game.
The plot is right out of Sci Fi classics, a mixture of Alien and Resident Evil, but it pulls it off really well, with a a way of keeping you guessing till the end.

Don’t know what more can be said about it. It really is an excellent game to play.

I think this game is worth buying. I’m surprised it’s not more popular. I rarely hear my fellow gamer friends converse about it. I thought the game was scary from the opening cut-scene of the space-ship with an eerie as hell female voice singing “twinkle twinkle little star.” I never would have figured that that song would make me uneasy in my chair like that. I thought the story line was great. I do have only a few complaints: there’s never enough money when you really need to buy something for upgrades, the weapons seem weak on the aliens (and can be frustrating to use), i would rather this was a 1st person game than a 3rd person game. I can understand why the developers went that direction. The main character’s suit is cool to look at, adds to the atmosphere of the game, and jumping in zero-g environments is cooler in 3rd person. The only other complaint I have is that it seems like the main character walks incredibly slow, as if I’m trying to control Frankenstein. It sucks moving so slow when you’re being swarmed by aliens. Other than that, I think it’s one of the best games of ALL TIME. I would compare it to playing Doom 3.
If I could only give one constructive criticism to ALL game developers…….give the players their own choice to play either 1st or 3rd person. Even so, this game gets 5 stars for being so scary, and I never get scared from horror movies or games.

Dead Space is unique among FPS games. The 3rd person perspective takes some getting used to but provides the kind of immersive experience that other games of this genre lack. The enemies that you will encounter are wily and absolutely determined to attack and kill your avatar regardless of the odds against them. They will continue to attack until you literally dismember them. There is no place where you are safe (even elevators!)
Some of the battles you will fight are heart-poundingly intense. Not for little kids!!!
Dead Space is also a homage to some of the best games ever written for the PC, including the original System Shock (audio and video logs that further the back-story) and certainly Half Life.
The game also ran faultlessly. No crashes, lock-ups, or other programming bugs that plague many games (i.e. FarCry2)
Killer game!

Like Zombies? Of course you do. Like Sci-fi? Natch, then this is the game for you. Finding yet another way to make zombies relevant, DEAD SPACE is a chip off the old block.
Unlike standard zombies that need to be dispatched by destroying or removing the head, DS prefers the EVIL DEAD mythos of dismemberment. Yes boys and girls a perfect excuse for even more blood letting. So many ways to take care of those pesky undead too! Many badass weapons at your disposal not to mention telekinesis! I enjoyed this title immensely and unless lots of gore and flying body parts are too much for you then i’m thinking you’ll love this as much as I. Four stars!

If you love action and gore genre, then this game is a must play for you. It flows smoothly, story unfolds nicely and the action gets thicker as the game progresses. The missions are very interesting and fights with the necromorphs will give you goosebumps of your lifetime. It is THE best game I’ve played on any platform, period. You’d be a fool or a faint-heart to let go this one. Play it before the sequel comes out in 2010.

I can honestly say that I wasn’t expecting this game to be as fun as it is.. I think that part of what makes this game fun is that it wasn’t hyped up like some other titles that hit PS3 like Haze, Star Wars Force Unleashed. Not taking away from any of these games but typically hype can be a double edged sword because games never quite meet expectations when there is hype. Anyway I rented this game because I wasn’t sure about it & honestly I wish I would of bought it.. You feel like you are in a science fiction/horror movie flick reminiscent of Event Horizon, Aliens, etc. The graphics are excellent because they are dark, but very detailed & the sound is superb. When low on health your character labors for breath because he is weak & when running great distances his breathing is labored. Not to mention the suspenseful music when the enemies jump out at you & scare the crap out of you. This game reminds me of the very 1st Resident Evil that was created back in the 90′s on the 1st Playstation. This is definitely a survival horror game at its greatest. I am not going to go into the specific details in my review because there are several reviews that have covered the technical logistics on the strong points of this game. All I can say is that if you are a fan of sci-fi horror flicks, get this game!! Turn all the lights off & crank up the sound & prepare to have the crap scared out of you LOL..

Wow. All I can say is wow. When I first bought this game, I played it for about an hour, thought it was awful then took it back. For weeks afterwards I felt guilty about not giving the game a fair chance. So the I went back to Gamestop and bought it again. This time I played it longer, and loved it. Great graphics, great voice overs, great aliens, and great scares. I have wanted A game this scary for the Xbox 360 for a long time. I do have to say though, this game has absolutely no replay value. It is fun the first time though. Give it a good chance. If you do not like horror games though, do not try it.

Let me start off by saying, I didn’t even know about this game until last Friday when I went into GameStop for another game. I saw a picture on the box and poster of it in the store. I asked the store clerk about the game. He went on and on about the E3 demo he saw. “It is freakin’ crazy… You are in zero gravity bouncing around…Combo of Bioshock and Resident Evil….You can’t kill all the creatures the same way…” and so on. It peaked my interest. Since I am huge survival horror game fan, I had to buy it.
The clerk was correct it is freakin’ crazy. I really have enjoyed this game, Okay I am only on chapter 2. I have a ways to go before the game is complete. Just like all the other reviewers have stated: The game is a combo of Bioshock, Doom, Resident Evil, and Gears of War. All games I have enjoyed. Dead Space is bloody, scary at times, and unique.
Dead Space is fun. I even heard it is banned in some countries. The game isn’t for young children though. So parents be warned if you buy this game for your nine year old child, you are saying yes to killing of babies…Undead mutant babies, but still their babies. I just don’t think that is okay for an elementary aged child. For teens/adults I think it is a breath of fresh air. I just beat Silent Hill 5, and my bloodlust just couldn’t wait for Resistance 2 and Gears of War 2.
My break down~
Story So far: 9/10- I enjoyed it so far.
Graphics: 10/10- It is amazingly detailed game.
Sound: 10/10- Creepy.
Game play: 9/10- Easy controls to learn. Weapons are cool.
Uniqueness: 8/10- It does include aspects of others games. But, what game doesn’t?
I definitely recommend Dead Space if you enjoy action/ horror games. Just be careful those babies are wicked.

The premise of the game is nothing new – contact with a remote ship deep in space is lost & someone has to check out why no one is answering the phone anymore. You know going in that there’s not going to be an innocent explanation, at least one that doesn’t involve gruesome deaths and a seriously nasty alien race that specializes in finding new ways to take apart a human body. Despite the familiar backstory, Dead Space manages to go far beyond expectations and offers a truly engaging and often frightening gaming experience.
The visuals are amazing, with little noticable difference between cutscenes and gameplay. Since almost everything takes place in some degree of darkness, the use of light shadow is key and it’s never looked better than in Dead Space.
Not using a HUD – heads up display – is a bold move for any kind of game and it works well here. Your health shows in your spine, your ammo count shows when you aim a gun, and things like your inventory and map can be pulled up easily. Eliminating the usual distractions from the screen makes it a more immersive experience and creates the feel of “playing” a movie.
Very fews games manage to impress anyone with the way they use sound, but Dead Space has to be at the top of that list. Even when there’s nothing really happening – just walking down a hallway, for instance – the sounds of the moaning & creaking of the ship or a distant alarm or random rattling & buzzing of unseen machinery add to the sense of place and general atmosphere. The voice acting is absolutely top-notch and the sounds made by the aliens are fantastically varied and impressive. I played this game late at night wearing headphones with the lights out and it was as scary as any movie I’ve ever seen.
The game has a reasonable learning curve and it not easy nor impossibly hard. Despite the size of the ship and the sometimes maze-like layout, you can never really get lost because you have the ability to have the path you are supposed to take light up with a button. Dismemberment – as opposed to killing (you’ll see) – is strangely satisfying and appropriately gory. Parts that take place in zero gravity are amazing, not just because of the physics but the sound vacuum that somehow manages to make everything even creepier than it already is.
The lack on online play or any kind of multiplayer limits the replay value of Dead Space to attempting higher levels of difficulty or completion of challenges. That means that most people will spend about 10 to 12 hours with the game and then move on. Despite this, Dead Space is most certainly worth the price since it’s now part of the Platinum series ($20), and I’m confident that anyone will consider it money well spent.

I absolutely love this game. It is incredibly well made, polished in every aspect and accomplishes what it sets out to do – entertain and scare the living crap out of you. My favorite horror game since Resident Evil 2. It is far better than Bioshock, in my opinion, and beats Condemned hands down, a game I enjoyed immensely.
The graphics in this game are exceptional. From the dark and macabre art style to the detail and crispness of the visuals, you will be in awe at what you see as well as thoroughly grossed out. The game is dark (it IS a survival horror after all) and it takes place in a Space Station but rarely do the visuals get repetitive. It is an adventure for your eyes all the way through and the sights to behold get more impressive as the game progresses. You have to see it for yourself.
The main character, Isaac, looks fantastic and his upgradeable suit makes feel like a complete badass until some creature tears you half. The animations are very well done and Isaac labors around in his heavy suit just as you would expect him to. It looks so convincing you might feel yourself getting an asthma attack if you’re not already suffering from a panic attack thanks to the games surreal atmosphere. The creatures you face are equally as detailed as Isaac and move just as fluid. They look like something out of your worst nightmares and most likely will be in your next nightmare. Shooting off legs and arms looks as grisly as it sounds and there is nothing quite like shooting off the leg of a creature only to have it clawing its way toward you at an increasing pace while you frantically reload. The creatures you face have a decent range in variety but a few more types would have been perfect. The ones we do have are well thought out and must be combated differently from one another. The mini bosses and bosses you come across are jaw dropping. Fighting them is intimidating and intense while defeating them leaves you with a pure sense of accomplishment. Do not be surprised if you are gasping for breath afterwards. This game just looks stunning and that is only part of what makes it such a memorable experience.
The sound equals the graphics in quality and pulls no punches when it comes to creeping you the hell out. You will be tense and under constant duress thanks to the ominous noises you hear while making your way through the bleak, massive mining ship. The music is great, a classical score which sets the mood perfectly. The grunts and groans of Isaac are convincing when he gets hit, you can just feel his pain and terror. The shrieks, hisses, growls and howls of the creatures will send shivers up and down your spine and cause tightness in your chest. Some of the creatures make noises I can’t even describe, all I can say is they sound inhuman and demonic. You will hear these creatures scurrying about in the vents above and around you, waiting to strike or you will hear something massive off in the distance in the direction you are heading. The sound in this game, particularly if you have surround sound or a surround sound headset (I use Tritton AxPros), will fill you with dread while the graphics finish off the deadly one-two combo leaving you begging for mercy. No movie and no novel can get to me the way Dead Space has. To top it off, the voice acting in this game is as high in quality as an animated feature film. The potency of the graphics and sound created such a disturbing atmosphere that I felt like a kid watching Halloween or The Exorcist for the first time. I loved it.
This is not a movie or book though, it is a game, and the most important part of a game is the gameplay. Once again, Dead Space does not disappoint. The controls are tight, responsive and intuitive. Never was my experience compromised because of unresponsive or whacky controls. You and Isaac will move through the ship as one. Now some may think Isaac moves around too sluggish for their tastes, he is wearing a heavy space suit after all, but his slow movement actually adds to the tension and immersion of the game. It seems every aspect of this game was thought out and pre planned a head of time to provide you with the ultimate experience. The only slight gripe I have when it coems to his controls is that the melee seems a little too sensitive. Sometimes I just want to hit a creature once, to knock it back, but because I am a little freaked out I might tremble a bit and ever so slightly hit the button a second time causing Isaac to immediately melee a second time, backhanded. This leaves me open for an enemy to strike. A minor gripe in what are otherwise near flawless controls.
The game is essentially a corridor based survival. You will go from room to room and blood soaked hallway to blood soaked hallway. Thanks to the graphics and sound all of this sucks you right in but the gameplay mixes up your experience very well. I don’t want to spoil anything so I will keep this brief but you do more than just walk around a “haunted” spaceship being scared and killing bad guys. You will find yourself in zero gravity situations, spacewalking where you must watch your oxygen level, shooting a turret like Luke Skywalker and Han Solo on the Millenium Falcon and even spending some time at a shooting range or playing a futuristic game called Z-ball. You will also find yourself in massive rooms with gorgeous views of an asteroid field and other sights and in thundering, fiery engine rooms which will make you sweat. Now I don’t want to spoil anything so I can’t go into too much detail but trust me, the game keeps you in interesting situations and surroundings right up to the very end. It does not let up.
You also have abilities (powers) such as Stasis which freezes your enemies as well as objects (for solving puzzles) and Kineses where you can control objects telekinetically. These abilites are a godsend and work great with the weapons for combat and are used in some interesting puzzle solving situations as well. The weapons in Dead Space can get pretty creative and go well beyond your standard pulse rifle (in the game) and flamethrower (in the game). My personal favorite was the Line Gun which shot out a laser like beam horizontally; perfect for severing both legs at one time. This weapon had a secondary fire where it fired a timed proximity plasma mine and it worked beautifully. All the weapons have a secondary fire.
The pacing of the game is very well done. All survival horror games start off scary and then lose their steam as time goes on. The same does happen with Dead Space as you get used to the game world but the game manages to evolve its gameplay very well to keep you interested. You will always be creeped out thanks to the graphics and sound but as you progress through the game you will find yourself more involved with the upgrading of your equipment, advancing the storyline and exploring new areas. The game goes from pure horror to action horror to thriller and then back to horror again. It does a real good job keeping you interested and satisfied and always has one more scare to make you jump and keeps your heart rate a few beats above normal. The pacing of the game is very well done other than a slight slow period around the middle of the game, but then it’s back to burning on all cylinders again. The end is fantastic and unlike most games does not feel rushed at all. The ending is perfect climax to a wonderful game.
Obviously I loved this game. It is such high quality that it may sound like I think it is perfect. well no game is perfect and there are areas I think Dead space could have been better in. As few as they are, I’ll just list them briefly:
- The creatures aren’t as dynamic as I would like. They crawl through the vents, this is how they get around the ship and get to you. The problem is they only do this in unexplored areas or areas that story has lead you to. If you go back to an area you have already cleared out just to get a health pack you didn’t have room for in your inventory last time you visited, nothing will attack you or follow you there. Now I don’t need to be constantly harassed because this would make the game tedious but no area should ever feel “safe” just because I have been there before. Once in a while I should have heard some clanging in the vents as something was coming for me. Makes the times you will be attacked less predictable.
- I already mentioned the sensitive melee button. Not a big deal but a slight gripe.
- A couple of the middle chapters were slow moving but all in all the game was a complete rush.
- The story is somewhat generic, with an alien infection plot line, blah blah. The storytelling however is very well done however. Very few cutscenes and everything done in real time. I just wish horror games would go back to using the supernatural and forget all this infection stuff.
In Conclusion:
Everything about this game oozes quality and production value. When I first heard of Dead Space several months ago I was interested. I desperately wanted a good survival horror game based in space. Never in my wildest dreams would I have expected Dead Space to not only meet my expectations but surpass them completely. There is no multiplayer here, no coop and no established license for the game to fall back on. Dead Space stands on its own two feet as an exceptionally well made single player experience which keeps you captivated until the very end. When it is all over (it took me over 20 hours to beat it on hard mode) you will find yourself watching the credits until the very end because you will appreciate the effort that much. At least that is what I did.
I couldn’t recommend this game more. My letter grade for Dead Space would be an A
Rating
If I were to give this game a number grade, I’d probably give it a 90.
I don’t play very many games anymore. I guess I burned myself out as a kid =). But when I first started playing this game, I was really struck by how far games as come in terms of production value- this game is definitely a top quality production. Often it reminded me of Alien (the movie).
I can’t say that I was really scared though. Maybe the first hour or so was scary. But after that, I’d say, for me, it was more “thriller” than “horror”. I play all of my games in the dark and in the dead of night by default btw. But maybe I was prepared because just before playing this game, I finished Silent Hill Homecoming. I found that game to be much darker, much more oppressive. Dead Space had too much action for me to be really scared. Things jumping out at me can only be scary if it doesn’t happen often. In dead space it’s happening all the time. I go into a room, and I expect something to jump out at me… and it usually does.
Overall, I definitely enjoyed the experience.

I bought this game without renting first based on some screenshots and reviews I had seen. The first thing that I noticed and the only thing that I have a gripe with was that they revealed the monsters in the game too soon. This took away some of the horror suspense for me, but the rest of the game was action-packed and VERY hard to put down. So many times, I knew I had to save and quit but kept playing past save points just because I wanted to see what was next. I never felt that the game got repetitive and Im currently playing through a second time because there are lots of weapons that I have not even gotten a chance to use yet. Everything in the game is pot notch such as the voice acting, story, creature design, level design, and replayability. Beware, however, because this is by far the goriest game I have ever played. Be ready to be in for an exiting, scary trip through hell when playing this game. Worth more than a rental for sure.

I am not a huge gamer but love gaming with horror games every now and then. This has to be one of my favorite horror games yet. The graphics are pretty GOOD, the plot (even though generic – a group of people crash on a planet while looking for another crashed ship but find aliends on board) is interesting. But the atmosphere and sound really make this a winner. The only other game that I have enjoyed the atmosphere as much as this one was The Suffering on XBOX. This one is almost just as good. I jumped while playing this more than once and that doesnt happen that often with me. I didnt jump constantly but there are a few spots were you cant help but jump out of your seat. If you are a fan of horror like I am, then dont pass this up.

If you combined the movies Event Horizon and John Carpenter’s The Thing, you might get something like Dead Space. This game flew under the radar of many (including myself) until everyone caught wind of the “wow” reviews on the gaming websites. It’s really creepy and features some top notch graphics. If you liked Bioshock, chances are you will have a blast with Dead Space. The only negative would be that it’s too much of the same. You often go back through the same rooms and there isn’t a wide variety of enemies.
I would save some money and just rent it, because even though it’s a great game, you probably won’t play it that much after you beat the single player mode.

I wrote a review a couple of months ago in which I bemoaned the 3rd persen perspective and poor mouse controls of this game. Nevertheless I played it through because I loved the game so much in every other respect. Well I have since gone back and set my graphics to “LOW”, and lo and behold the graphics still look amazing and there are no longer any mouse control problems at all. I can aim and control my character perfectly. I cannot see any reduction in graphics! C.Hill you might want to try this and you may have a much better experience. Personally I think this is one of the best games Ive ever played. Its right up there with HL2 and SS2. Just wish the prequel deadspace extraction was being made for PC and not Wii. I need more Dead Space.

This is one truly amazing title. It has everything a horror game needs, and A great, deep story to follow with.

The game is constantly keeping players on the edge of their seats with thrilling moments. If you pay attention it has an amazing story, with lots of background on websites, other games, and media.
It has supplied me with personally one of the best games Ive played. I highly recommend anyone into scary adventures, considering buying this, or that is just looking for a good game to pick this up ASAP. Its probably really cheap as its slightly older, and it would be good to know the first story before the sequel comes out
If your playing through the first time, I recommend Trying to complete it on hard, as the lower difficulties will probably be to easy, and you might not get the full experience.

I think I’ve been waiting for Dead Space for a few years…
Yes, I’ve played every other awesome game this year. I’m a diehard Gears of War fan and I loved GOW2, but I have to truly say that Dead Space captured my imagination, heart and soul.
The level design is awesome, gameplay is captivating and the design choices awarded by the loss of gravity or the absence of oxygen (read, vacuum) make the game soo fun.
If you haven’t tried it, please do, you will NOT be disappointed.

This game did what Resident Evil 5 couldn’t, and what Resident Evil should have. It took that new style, third person over the shoulder, gameplay, but actually kept the horror in survival horror. With the high detail to sound more then anything, it gives the empty ship a tense feel to it.
And when you play on impossible, it turns it up even more. This is my favorite game as of now, and when you ad the movie, and hopefully, if it dosent fail, the Wii prequel, it rocks.
A must have for horror fans

This game is fairly short but it is great! There are some really cool things that make this game stand out with originality, such as Zero Gravity in certain parts, different weapons than the typical games, upgrading your weapons done in a new way, and the dismembering WOW. This game has fantastic graphics, entertaining, fun, interesting, yet challenging all around. It’s also really cool to have a sci-fi/survival horror game as well. You can play the game through again ater you beat it with all the stuff you had the first play through and further upgrade your weapons/armor and modules. By the way if you watched dead space downfall don’t worry the game IS actually good and the characters do not look goofy like they did in the cartoon… As a last comment, the technology within the game is so freakin cool, seriously check this game out (IF YOU ARE OLD ENOUGH, DO NOT LET CHILDREN PLAY THIS OR EVEN WATCH THIS BEING PLAYED, IT IS BRUTAL)

I just wanted to say that Dead Space is pretty awesome. It’s kind of a cross between Resident Evil 2 and the Alien movies. You are alone. You are in space. There are ravenous disgusting monsters after you. In a word: FUN!
The game also brought some diverse elements as well. Such as: Zero gravity areas; vacuum areas (which btw I LOVED the attention to detail that there was no sound during these times since sound doesn’t exist in vaccums); and of course like most have said something new for us, dismembering instead of headshots!
The storyline keeps you intrigued as well.
They hit the mark with this game and I seriously hope to see a sequel.

Dead Space is a refreshing change from most of the Action/Horror games that have been released of late. It seems that the Survival Horror genre has been lacking in the scare department, but Dead Space definitly brings a lot of scare to the next-gen consoles. Dead Space is a real legit videogame that brings a good story line, great graphics, fairly easy controls and loads of playability.
I was somewhat weary about picking up this one because in my opinion, the Survival Horror genre has changed, and not for the better but I’m glad I did because I haven’t regretted a single moment of play since.
Basically, here’s what’s going down in Dead Space. Your name is Isaac Clarke and you basically become trapped on a desolate airship out in the middle of space with a few of your partners who serve you with no help. Your only way of Survival is off your own instincts and capabilities to maim everything in your path. The story has a lot of twists and turns and can be a real nail biter, so it’s very interresting until the very end.
The basic form of gameplay is an over the shoulder view (like most games of late), so if you’ve played Resident Evil 5 or Gears Of War, then you’ll know exactly what you’re doing in Dead Space.
All I can say without giving away to much is that I definitly recommend this game to anybody familiar with the action/horror genre and I was pleasently surprised considering I haven’t played a Horror game this good since Resident Evil: Code Veronica.

First off, if you have a Xbox360 or PS3 hooked up to the internet then do yourself a favor and download the demo.
Basically this game is a horror 3rd person survival game. Think ‘Alien’ the movie and ‘Dark Sector’ the game and you have a decent picture. Great characters, voice acting and an atmosphere that’s real tense make this a must own game.
The only downfall is arguably that it has no online and a little short in length (8 hours), but this game is so good that isn’t really too much of an issue. At $60 it is worth it. At $40 or less you’d be crazy not to get it.

So I just beat the game about 5 minutes ago and let me tell you… Dead Space is one hell of a ride. I can’t recall any other game that made me scream like a little girl in horror. It ranks up there with some of my favorites, Bioshock, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Half-Life 2… and now Dead Space.
One of my friend had picked this up for a LAN party we have every now and then and we decided to take turn playing it… at night… with the lights off. My turn did not last long but I was creeping around every corner waiting for the next horrible thing to try and jump out and grab me, relieving my body of my pesky head. I forgot about it for a while until I saw it in a store for sale and decided to pick it up. I’ve been playing games since Castle Wolfenstein, and I’ve played many, many of them, so I know what I like. I know most people rate by graphics and blah and blah, but I’ll just mention some of the things that stuck out in my mind while playing and reasons why I think I loved this game so much:
Sound:
From the opening scene the sound automatically grabbed my attention. Surround sound on this is amazing, ambient noises of the ship creaking and groaning, the scuttling of feet from somewhere behind, and above you, constantly making you check your surroundings, the deafening roar of one of the engine rooms, the muffled sounds of a vacuum where all you can really hear is your boots clanking and you heavy breathing within your helmet (love that effect so much), to the horrible cacophony of some monstrous, alien beast that would make even Cthulhu crap his pants.
Environment:
Very Doom 3-esque, lots of dimly lit corridors, flashing lights, steam, metal. But what do you expect from a horror game set in space. Ah but here’s where it differs. First you have your normal room, lots of air, lots of gravity. Then you have your vacuum rooms, no air but a convenient timer on your suits displays you oxygen supply, so you know how long you have before you die a horrible, breathless death. The you have the zero-g environments (my personal fave) where you must maneuver without gravity using you aiming and gravity boots to jump around to ceilings, walls… the hull of the ship, oh yeah. Then you have no gravity and no air and that’s when it really gets scary, it’s kind of easy to get yourself turned around andlose track of where the air lock is so be careful. Also when playing, watch your air and remember to take about 10 seconds off of it, because it takes around 10 seconds for you to open the door, step in, for the door to close and the compartment to re-pressurize (But having a fully upgraded suit will increase your air supply so there will be few instances when you’re making a mad dash to the air lock).
Logs:
I have loved this since Doom 3. Bioshock used it quite well too. Audio and texts logs are a great ways to add to the narrative of a story without having to stop every five minutes for cut scenes, while also being completely optional. This is a very easy and useful plot device I hope more games will utilize.
Upgrading:
This part I really loved, and what kept pushing me forward, is the promise of bigger and badder firepower, armor, telekinesis, and stasis (a sort of time-slowing down effect in the game). This is why I keep coming back to Call of Duty 4 and 5, which I think really nailed down their multi-player upgrades like this games single-player. A real feeling of progression, that by the end of it all your guy will be one hell of a weapon.
Survivor:
Very balanced money system than most games. The style I played was constantly upgrading my suit and gear, only a few times did I spend it on ammo (with the exception of buying all the guns to test each one out), so that left me with little of no money to simply just load up on bullets. But this added to the tension, and reminded me of playing Doom 3 a lot, that whole “Ok I got 4 bullets in this gun and about 10 bullets in that one… oh… oh man.” While I could have skimped on nodes (things used to upgrade your weapons and suit) I chose not to, I played it like a survivor, and felt so much better when I came out alive. And even if you decided to go this route there is still ways to defeat baddies without bullets, by swinging your gun frantically at them (while screaming “I DON’T KNOW YOU! THAT’S MY PURSE!”), using stasis to slow them down and run up on them a stomp on them with your big ole mechanic’s boots, or even using telekinesis to grab random boxes and explosive containers to lob at them.
Replay:
I’m probably going to pick up some other games now, several I am very close to finishing, but I have no doubt that Dead Space will get it’s hooks into me again sometime in the future (like Bioshock did) and I’m sure I’ll enjoy it just as much the second time around… especially when I’m going for the “use only the starting weapon to beat the game” achievement.
So if your looking for a good thrill, something to play late at night with the lights off and volume cranked up, something to make you jump and go “I god I hear something horrible… it’s close but… where IS IT?!”, or just some good solid game play, I suggest you pick this up.
P.S.
As you play you might notice a lot of strange alien language scribbles here and there on walls and floors, and just write is off as babble. DON’T! There is a cipher for this language somewhere 1/2 way through the game. I copied it down and to my horror began translating some of the alien babble and… it actually says stuff! Praise Altman!

Oh The Horror: Dead Space does an amazing job of scaring the piss out of you. The lighting, the sound, the enemies, and the situations you are put in all come together to deliver a truly terrifying experience. By the end of the game you’ll be used to the creatures popping out and dropping down, but damn if getting to that point isn’t a nerve-wracking experience.
In Space, You Can Hear A Lot, Actually: The sound design in Dead Space deserves special recognition in creating one of the eeriest atmospheres I’ve ever spent twelve hours traipsing through. While you get the standard horror game whispers, mutterings, bumps, and screams, it’s when you’re out in the generally soundless void that the sound design truly excels, muting to the point where you feel the sound rather than hear it.
Twisted Tales Of Space: Dead Space’s fiction is a rather twisted tale of religion, science, and madness. It kept me guessing up until the very end, at which point I realized I had guessed wrong, and that doesn’t happen to me too often. The only thing I saw coming was the very end, just before the credits roll, though I suppose it had to be that way. Audio, video, and text logs only make the game that much deeper.
The HUD-less Spaceman: The fact that the game has no HUD to speak of is a key factor in the immersive atmosphere of Dead Space. Your health and power indicators are on your back, your weapons display all contain displays showing the amount of ammo you have left. The only time you access a screen during normal gameplay is to open up your inventory, and even that is a projected image rather than a floating box.
Fun With Gravity: Story and presentation aside, Dead Space is a relatively standard third-person shooter until you find yourself propelling yourself through space from platform to platform in zero gravity environments. Some of the game’s most impressive moments come during moments of weightlessness, and the physics engine governing objects in motion is very satisfying.
Space Engineering 101: Upgrading equipment using the tool bench is an excellent way to customize the game to your liking. Finding power cores, needed to upgrade weapons, armor, and gadgets, almost immediately set me thinking about what I was going to modify next, should I make it to the next workbench alive. Being able to focus power on the weapons you are comfortable with is a major plus.

I love that this game scares me when I am about to move into the next room! I am a huge fan of the survival horror genre and this is the best I’ve played….ever! I was a very much into the Resident Evil series. I thought Resident Evil 4 was the best of the bunch and I give this a slight nod over RE 4. The graphics are amazing. The sound is amazing. This game is easy to pick up and start going. The controls make perfect sense. A very satisfying game experience. It took me a couple of weeks, several hours at a time to finish.
I mostly play games on the easiest level because I like to see the whole game. Trust me, even on easy, this is a fun, attainable challenge. The best part is the fact that you can run sparse on necessities but, give it time, around the corner will be exactly what you need.
My recommednation: scavenge as much as you can, sell it, and upgrade your weapons by buying power nodes as fast as possible. You must enter the last level with a couple of weapons upgraded to the max or at least nearly maxed out. I picked a couple of weapons early in the game as my two main weapons and the used two more as backups and did n’t really upgrade them. Oh yeah, upgrade your rig.
You will not be disappointed! Please let there be a DEAD SPACE 2! Please!

I’m very happy to see that more people have played this game and reviewed it since last week when the only reviews were written by some net activists with a paranoid big brother conspiracy agenda (you should read them; they’re funny).
The game is solid. Yes, it rehashes storylines and plots from every seminal scifi/horror movie and game. Yes, the plot moves along in a formulaic way that utilizes the same tactic over and over (namely, radio communications from protagonist Isaac’s teammates somewhere else on the ship sending him to one part of the ship or another to do something only to contact him again upon arrival there that something isn’t working and he’ll have to do ten other things before he can get this or that part of the ship operational).
The point is, the -ahem- effluence has hit the fan aboard the ship and everything is malfunctioning.
What makes this game work are three things: gameplay, graphics, sound design. There’s great satisfaction in cutting an enemy to ribbons with projected blades of “energy”.
THe environments are lush (although scary) and believable and the soundscapes, noises and score get your adrenaline pumping.
The game gets scarier as it goes along, and the Bioshock influence becomes more noticeable, moving from retro posters and quirky props like branded soda machines and such, to funhouse scenes of bizarre surgeries and suicides acted out by NPC’s. It’s a great mood-building tactic any good game designer would use and has much less to do with ripping Bioshock off than assimilating a tested design strategy.
Most importantly, the game is really really fun. It’s not hardcore scifi, but if that’s what you want read a scifi novel. Maybe Isaac Asimov or Arthur C. Clarke….
Anti- EA conspiracy theorists- get a healthier hobby. Try playing a video game. I recommend Dead Space.

The scariest game EVER!, not even Fear got under my skin like this game did, i am on my third play trough (Trophy hunting) and i still get tense and scared, its definetly a competition to Resident Evil in the survival horror genre.
Good: Graphics and sound make an inmersive and scary enviroment, everything looks great even after year and a half later, gerat action, and control schemes, the story its great and has a lot of replayability, its just a great game. And the ending was terrific.
Bad: the shooting asteroids level, if it wasnt for it the game would be perfect.
Cant wait for Dead Space 2

I know is an older game, and it may not have a lot of action, BUT the suspense and music of the game makes it worthy. This could easily scare you if you are playing it for the first time and alone at night.
Great game and the price is good too. I also liked the service: game is perfect condition, and arrived onn time, even before the designated date.

Dead Space
Im not a big “survival horror” game fan. Was never really into Resident Evil, Silent Hill or games of the like… you see… Im what one would call an impatient gamer. I dont like big complex puzzles… I dont like walking around looking for artifacts. I like a good, immersive story… I like to shoot stuff… I like tension… I like action.
When I saw this game on the shelf at first I kinda just blew it off. I didnt even hear of it before it was released. I then read some reviews of the game and it began to peak my interest… but laying down $60 for a game is no easy feat, especially if youre entering a genra that you dont much care for… but I decided to take the risk.
This game is absolutely amazing!!! If you took the fright factor of DOOM3, and the innovation of BIOSHOCK…. you have Dead Space. Extremely well written (however the story has been done before), well produced and immersive. Graphically superior with an incredible sound design (If you have a good sound system, I recommend turning it up) which adds to the incredible tension. This game is fast paced while throwing a few puzzles in here and there, but not too repetitive to turn off an impatient gamer as myself.
As I said earlier much of this game and its theme are borrowed and they dont pretend to be 100% original (see if you can find the reference to Dr. J. Carmack in your travels). However, they have made some gameplay innovations. Whether you are receiving an audio or video message, viewing the map or scrolling through your inventory, you never leave the games enviornment… it shows up in a small holographic screen in front of you. If your lost and need to know where to go next, you simply click a button and your suit lays a temporary path (think laser pen) for you on the floor. Your gauges (health and oxygen) are actually incorporated on the back of your suit. This innovation adds to the tension and keeps you in the story throughout the game.
Dead Space is by far the scariest, most immersive and most fun game I have played this year. I cant believe I almost past it up. In short… Dead Space is Dead On.

Let me preface this review by saying that I just got done playing a couple other highly anticipated games before playing Dead Space. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and Silent Hill: Homecoming were games that I was really looking forward to for a long time. Then I got those games and they were … well good, but not real great. I think those two games just tried too hard, and in the end they just were not fun to play they were frustrating to play.
Then comes along Dead Space and let me tell you that this game blows both of those out of the water. This game is FUN TO PLAY. Not to mention an awesome story that combines a couple of my favorite movies (Aliens, The Thing) in a unique way that I didn’t expect and its AWESOME. The animated move Downfall was also particularly cool. Good job this time EA! Now just don’t ruin it by rushing a Dead Space 2 just because your greedy.

Dead Space is an amazing game. From a fantastic storyline to some chills to your spine, this game will keep you going until the end.
First of all, the storyline was amazing. Your sent on a mission to repair the USG Ishimura, a mining vessel when a distress call is sent from it. After you land though, things start to go awall. The crew of the ship is dead (well not exactly) and the ship is in ruins. The adventure begins!
Basically, you head around the ship repairing each individual part of it and getting things you need. The only problem i had with this is that Isaac (the character you play as) is always being told what to do. It gets kind of frustrating when you’re doing all the work and the other people are all locked up safe on the bridge of the ship. But that’s not a serious enough issue to ruin the game, trust me.
The gameplay is intense, and this is the ONLY game that i have played that has actually got me freaked out. From random zombies just popping out everywhere running at you and making weird noises to just really messed up people that have obviously been messed up from seeing quite an experiance. It will keep you on the edge of your seat. For me though that’s the reason i kept playing! Blowing off a tentacle never get’s old and it keeps me grinning every time.
The weapons for this game are all futuristic mining tools which i thought was really neat. You have quite a variety of weapons to choose from as well so don’t worry about that. You also have 2 kind of in-game help as well that can act as both a weapon and they also come along in the storyline to help you get past certain parts.
Bottom line, if you’re looking for a game that has a good story, blood and gore, and some real scares in it all in one, then Dead Space is the game for you. I promise you it won’t let you down.

I have been playing shooters for a long long time. After DOOM, no one had the guts to move away from head shots. Almost 3 decades has come and gone and shooters have remained the same. Woow these guys did get away with it, and they have come out with amazing results. This is the power of creativity.
We have played shooters with zombies in them, horror sci-fi games, different permutations and combinations. All have few different monsters as enemies. Either you shoot them in the head or it is some kind of quick press events to kill the bosses. Here you have to understand what every enemy is, remember how to kill when you see them again. As you walk through the levels, you see clues written in blood on what to do with each enemy.
The game continuously throws new surprises. You have to explore every level to find items to upgrade your weapons. When you first step into ZeroG… the fights gets crazy. Enemies will come from every direction, the map is a big globe. The level design is fantastic. Every single detail from hospital rooms, kitchens what ever that will be required in a big space ship is there. It is not like the super tidy carpeted Trek space ship. It is supposed to be some thing like a dirty mining rig, and you surely get the feel of it.
There is lot of creativity that has gone in.. which I didn’t expect from a big publisher like EA. You don’t find any M16, AK46, turret gun here. All the weapons are mining equipment. Our future mining equipments are lot more interesting than what we have today. As the main character is a engineer lot of things he does very cohesive with the gameplay. When you actually fix a lever and move things around it feels lot more natural.
I do have to say one thing about this game. It is truly meant for mature audience. Please don’t buy this game for very young children. There are few sections where you have to kick and stomp baby zombies. It gets too violent and scary. But as a horror/survival/thriller you need creepy enemies. Also they do give you a reason to keep searching and not quit half way around. The theme may be slightly similar to DMC4 girl friend search… but executed very well.
One gripe I have with this game as with DMC4 is backtracking. The game is quite long by today’s standard. The space ship feels much better because you are visiting some of the same areas while backtracking. It is not horrible, but it is there. I wish they hadn’t done that.
To give developers credit, they have done enough to avoid the regular backtracking nightmares like lost routes. You can always use your analog stick to show the dotted green walk line.
Previously I thought this one will be like Silent hill, this one is more closer to Resident Evil. Falls more in the creepy, scary game than survival horror game.
Technically, I don’t have to say much. Any one who has seen videos of the game already know this game looks stunning. Fantastic way to start the holiday season. Brand new IP, silky smooth game play, really well done game. Go treat yourself.

All in all I thought this was a really great game. While the game wasn’t wholly original, I always say that if you’re going to borrow make sure you do it well or better. Dead Space delivers quite a bit in that regard. It also includes influence by two of best science fiction films, in my opinion, Aliens and Event Horizon. I think Dead Space really captured the terrifying and brooding atmosphere that was inherent in Event Horizon. Not to mention the scare factor in Aliens with creatures jumping out at you. With Dead Space’s ability to fully immerse it’s users into its environment this resulted in an incredible gaming experience.
Pros:
Intense immersive environment
Zero Gravity levels
Highly detailed areas
Upgradeable weapons
Excellent use of a Nav Point
Unique look at enemies, where you need to dismember them
Game Length is about 12 to 15 hours
A couple fun mini-games
Makes full use of the controller, giving you lots of options
Has Kinesis (basically the Gravity Gun from HL2, but still fun)
Has Stasis (can freeze enemies)
Cons:
Other weapon options not that great
A strange variant on asteroids (for a few minutes in one section)
Controls can be hard to get used to
Background story is fuller if you watch/read other Dead Space material
When completing a game and wanting to play on a higher difficulty level you cannot use the same character, but you can reuse it to replay the same difficulty level.
The things that made Dead Space great were some simple adjustments to very basic things in video games. First off, something people may not notice at first is that there is nothing on the screen except your character. This is a third person view, where you control someone walking around. There’s no HUD to show how much ammo you have, or life meter, none of that is cluttering the screen. Instead they’ve put the life meter on the suit you are wearing and you readily see the ammo counter when you aim your weapons. Very simple changes, in my opinion, but they helped immerse me in the environment just that little bit more. The other thing that I really loved was the way they handle the Nav (Navigation) Point feature on many games today. Rather than have some point off in the distance that your character is supposed to head towards, this game allows you to push a button and it brings up a glowing line that will point you in the direction you are supposed to go. In a ship this large this is quite a boon, because otherwise the user would easily get lost or turned around.
One of the greatest features is the upgradeable weapons aspect of the game. Throughout the game you come across work benches. You can find or purchase things called “nodes” and you can insert these things into your weapons at work benches. Doing this increases your capacity, damage, and reload time. I thought this was a really cool aspect of the game. Rather than have hundreds of different weapons or series of weapons you can find, you merely upgrade the ones you have. This aspect was also quite a bit of fun.
A really fun part of this game is they have sections that are fully in zero gravity. So you can jump around all over the place. This was really awesome to experience, though sometimes disorienting, but that’s part of the experience. I think they really used the fact you’re in space to the highest level with this game, which was part of the reason this was so fun. One of the strange mini-games that are within this game is something called Zero-G Ball. It’s some strange variant on Basketball, but I couldn’t fully get the points up high enough. I guess that’s one achievement I’ll be missing out on.
Now Dead Space, as with anything, isn’t without some flaws. The first is the attempt at getting some emotional response from the audience. You play as someone named Isaac Clarke, which would be great for getting into character. However, similar to the characters in other shooters, you have a hard time getting into the character where you want to meet Isaac’s girlfriend who was on this ship. I think Half Life 2 did a better job with Alyx Vance, where you really interact with her throughout the game, so you wind up liking her towards the end quite a bit. Isaac’s girlfriend doesn’t have the same appeal, she feels more like any other side character you’d come across. Of course this makes sense, because part of the reason Dead Space is so terrifying is you always feel alone, so logically some aspect was going to have to suffer. Don’t get me wrong, the girl is essential to the story line in some regards, but it fails to get you emotionally vested in the character.
Another part comes in the form of the overall storyline. This is a great story, but I don’t think you’ll really grasp that from just playing the game. I went out and I read the comic book series and watched the animated movie, so I had already been somewhat immersed in the Dead Space environment before even putting the game in my Xbox. I don’t think the average user is going to get this same kind of experience out of the game. I really enjoy having supplementary material available for after I finish a game, but I also don’t think it should be dependent for getting into the game itself. The game should, frankly, be its own stand alone product.
The other gripe I had with this game was the other weapons. Yes, I know they’re supposed to function as tools, but I found them to be very unwieldy, especially when I’m trying to fight extremely fast creatures that charge you at great speeds. I’m sorry; I don’t have time for a charging period. Frankly I just stuck with the plasma cutter and pulse rifle after I managed to get my 30 kills achievement with each weapon. One last part I didn’t particular like much was their asteroids type part. Thankfully it only lasted a couple minutes and only took me a few tries, but I found this part of the game more annoying than fun. I think that had to do with the fact I didn’t like the guns slow movement, so I didn’t feel like I could really control the gun that well.
Over all I think this game is exceptionally well done, despite some of the minor flaws. The environment is incredibly immersive and it really is a scary game to play, especially late at night with all the lights shut off. It keeps the tension at such a high level, that you can’t help but get into it. The sounds and overall ambience of the environment are incredibly well done, which only adds to the effect when things jump out at you and attack. I think the length of the game is very acceptable, being somewhere between 12 and 15 hours to complete. I also think it has some degree of replay value.
4.5 out of 5

Well, this game itself doesn’t have anything to do with Looking Glass games of System Shock 2 but most likely was inspired by it and brought to the new technological advancements of the 21st century.
Can’t say more, if you’re familiar with System Shock 2 you’ll definitely like this game!

You need to play this game with dolby surround. I’m not big on horror movies but this game was like having the freakiest movie come to life. The story was exceptionally well laid out. I did feel the main character was cheezy in that he never questioned what was going on. Aside from having a character with way too much of a knuckle head the game was rock solid. I won’t be surprised if this is an award winner.

I am a Resident Evil fan, but this game is really way better. Its fresh and new. Maps and menus pop out of the character’s suite so you dont have to pause to check your status of location. Upgrades are amazing and well worth a replay because you can carry replay at a different difficulty once you finish the game with all your upgrades and armor! Definitely among my top 6 games.

Dead Space is one of the best games I have ever played (and I play alot of video games when I get the chance). Not really being the one to get scared of horror flicks and video games no matter how gruesome, bloody, and disturbing, but this game puts you INTENSLY ON EDGE. The game was well made 100%, from gameplay, to graphics, to sound, to great-story, to re-play value, everything. Even when you beat the game, which by the way has a huge twist at the end and you’ll be like what-the-@$%^! (in a way you’ll like and enjoy the game), if you replay it from the beginning I guarentee you that you’ll still jump. This game gave me nightmares and was so scary and heart-pounding I got sick to my stomach from my nerves just being on edge and not wanting to die some gruesome-bloody-death. Sometimes I hade to turn the dang game off when it got TOO SCARY. Even my freinds I recomended the game to got nightmares…..but you’ll want to keep playing..you want to get to the end and survive to see how it all turns out. As for the hard astroid part for the 1 bad review for this game, here’s a strategy: Shoot the bigger astroids always (and go trigger-happy), hit the others, too but big fast ones heading straight for your window sheild should be top priority; this part of the game last like maybe 1-3 minutes and then you can get back to the fun stuff. I won’t lie, I didn’t like this part either but only because it was hard to get the trophy (Playstation3-trophies, X-Box 3360-Achievements) for this part by surviving with 50% health or more. Anyway, don’t want to tell anything about the game to much, just read what it’s about and thats all you need to know, then enjoy heart pounding terror; thats almost more than the character you play in the game knows about whats going on. Well, hope this review was helpful to you…you will have lots of fun and be scared to death…..or at least a few nightmares and at times will be like “I can’t take to-much more of this”. Also check out the anime-dvd “Dead Space: Downfall” after you complete the game. It is also a great buy. *Those that enjoy the game, rumors have it EA is in the works for a sequel to this game!!!!!

I love when game designers do their homework–in this case watching horror movies and dissecting directorial decisions, and looking for ways to improve on the well-entrenched Resident Evil and Silent Hill games (not to ignore Condemned and the rest).
To state it simply–this game is scary in nearly all of the best ways. To express this point–my four-letter word use has quadrupled since I’ve started playing this game (yes, I haven’t finished it yet, so don’t ruin it for me!).
The first thing that hit me, like all good horror, was the exquisite sound effects. From a very ‘real’ sensation of being in the vacuum of space with muted, otherwordly emptiness, to the sound of creatures lurking behind you, or above you, or beside you, or jumping from a drain.
Second, is character introduction. Wait! Don’t glaze over this yet. There’s no exposition to let you know what’s going on, which adds to the discomfort. In one case, I finished an area and walked into a hallway to see a mini swarm of little creepy thingies shuddering toward my avatar. I had no idea how to deal with these things…so I tried to stomp them. Only to get swarmed. Arms flailing. Rapidly slamming A on my controller. I die gruesomely. Another four-letter word to wake the neighbors.
Before I go any farther, read this line: Buy this game and be scared.
Not ruin-the-couch scared, but weak scream and crazy laughter after you find out you’re trapped in a room without enough ammo so now you have to stasis and pummel creatures that don’t go down easy scared.
There are definite faults with this game. The ability to know where you’re going with the click of a button was hand holding, similar to the direction arrow in Bioshock. The other fault I’ve found so far is that there are a lot of fetch quests. In fact, the game starts with one. Come on, it’s horror! Finding a tram key is not horrific. Granted, the howling animals waiting for you are, and who knows where they’re hiding this time.
I’ve said enough. It’s a great game that is scary and fun and I can’t wait to play more.

Aboslutely incredible gaming. Gorgeous graphics, clever integration of stats (ammo, health, etc), no visual clutter, a great soundtrack, and an INTENSE gaming experince. I can’t wait for Dead Space 2!

This brings life to my favorite genre, survival horror. The enviroments, the monsters, and the story are amazing. Read the comics that were released before the game came out to get a better idea of whats going on in the story. This game is a masterpiece and I hope to see more games like it.

At 19.99 this game is a must own if you are interested in 3rd person shooters or horror themed games. Event Horizon the game… lol, it’s that good.

One thing I have to say, if you want raw terror, pick up something like Condemned: Criminal Origins, but if you want a scary and enjoyable experience that will leave you on the edge of your seat until the end of the game, then pick up Dead Space. I love horror games and this isn’t the scariest ever, but damn it if isn’t fun. Imagine Resident Evil 4&5 mashed together. Now throw them in space on a ship infested with something worse than zombies or the ganados. Now make your main character a super engineer from the FUTURE! Someone who you can actually get behind. Now you have the game.
With plot twists, intrigue and a whole lotta gore, this game is not for kids in any way. Way better when played in the dark and just as fun when played the second, third or even fourth (that’s where I am) time around. Just don’t pick it up if you didn’t like RE5, a lot of what made that game great is here.

I’ve been waiting for a game like this for a long time. Dead Space, even though I’ve been playing it for many many hours still somehow manages to freak me out and keep me on the edge of my seat, peering around corners hoping that I see my enemies before they see me.
Never before has an action shooter/rpg game kept me in such suspense. The story unfolds very eloquently, the monsters are terrifying and they don’t come in hordes, they come somehow when you least expect them. Just when you think its safe to walk somewhere, one will come out of nowhere which really gets your skin crawling.
The game gets deeper and darker the whole time, and sometimes you want to stop playing because things are getting a bit disturbing. (thats a good thing).
I don’t have anything bad to say about this game, performance is good at 1920 x 1200 on my 8800 GTS 640MB and the sound is absolutely terrifying and thrilling at the same time on my X-Fi sound card.
Oh one small bug in the game – You need to unplug any game controllers such as a steering wheel first, else the game will continuously rotate the camera.
If you want something new and thrilling out of the huge wad of action shooters out there, give Dead Space a try.

Dead space is a true sci-fi horror game; much like “advent horizon” and john carpenter’s “the thing”. With a lot of replay ability and some frighting scenes, it’ll be hard for you to put down the controller. I give this game five stars and it’s a game that every gamer should have in their collection.

No one used this title yet? Seriously? Anyhow, I figured I would write a small review for this game. I don’t think I have reviewed many games that would fit under the horror genre and it just seemed overdue. Warning though people, possible spoilers here.
Let me begin by saying that this game is outstanding. It’s interesting playing this game along side Resident Evil 5 since they did launch very close to each other. The graphics and controls are just outstanding and though the graphics in Resident Evil 5 may be slightly better, the controls in Dead Space more than make up for the experience.
It starts with a simple blue fuzzy screen where a zoom up of the main character’s girl friend’s face makes you terrified that the game’s graphics are going to be awful. And then, when you think you wasted your cash, you are pleasantly surprised by some truly breathtaking visuals. Time to relax, you made a good choice. The relaxation doesn’t last too long because two and a half minutes of talking and continued pretty visuals later the S word hits the fan and you are thrown into danger. It reminded me of Resident Evil 1 back in 1996 where you knew there was nothing good that could come out of your present location, but you felt that false sense of security was justified. Wrong. They not only don’t let that feeling last, but they also prove that if you didn’t read the instructions and figured out how to run, you’ll die quickly (like first instance of seeing an enemy kind of early). At this point you are thrown into the fire, and you have to survive and do things to help your remaining crew. The thing I liked most about this game over others I have played like it is that it really feels like your actions have purpose. The objectives aren’t things you could see yourself skipping. For instance, your partner radios you tell you that the engines are offline so the gravitation pull of the planet is pulling the ship in and soon it may start doing things like exploding or starting on fire. Stopping that from happening is a great objective! Never once did I go, “Why” when they asked me to do something. It just felt like a great story playing out.
The ambience in the game was utterly outstanding. They had a ton of scares, some obvious and others not. With the incorporation of realistic physics, a good chunk scares are you just knocking into stuff and then freaking out thinking someone is behind you. Don’t get me wrong though, it’s done very well. The sound in the game helps a lot with the scare factors. You will be walking down what you assume is an empty hallway but you can hear the aliens crawling around in the vents above you, or in the walls. You will hear something crawling above you and suddenly be attacked from behind. It’s not cheap though, they don’t spawn out of nowhere, you just need to be aware of your surroundings and take note of vents, etc.
Once again, the graphics are outstanding. The shadows, shading, and bump mapping are done very well and it’s not ridiculous. Little effects that they didn’t even need to put in are there and this is especially noticed when you go into zero gravity or any place that outer space is involved (“but Garrett your on a space ship!” I know). What I mean by this is when you go into certain halls there is damage to the hull and you get to travel around the debris and look at the insane detail that was put into making the atmosphere realistic. Things float around, planets are in the distance, water flows out of the pipe in super slow motion, and the sound is extremely muted. The muted sound not only creates an awesome ambience but also masks any monster trying to bite your bum off.
Like mentioned earlier, the controls rock. Do not play this game then move to Resident Evil 5 because you will be quite displeased. You walk around and are able to do full 360s with the left analog stick while changing the camera with the right analog stick. They also help speed up your response time to danger by making it so you automatically turn and aim where you are looking. This is handy if you look over your shoulder, see someone and want to shoot them immediately instead of later on. Other aspects of gameplay were mentioned earlier like missions that actually mean something, but there is another thing that makes this game awesome. You have a series of technical abilities used for puzzles and combat that almost makes this game like 1/8th a Zelda title (I lol’ed at that so I kept it in). You can use them to lift and move objects, throw them and even slow down time. It’s cool to see something about to impale you only to slow down its movements and blow it away ever so gracefully.
I think I covered everything. We have graphics, gameplay, sound, controls…. Oh yeah I forgot!
MENU and SHOPPING/WORKBENCH: The menu system is exactly what a game like this should have. Resident Evil 5 may have incorporated a real time menu that doesn’t pause the game because you wouldn’t want that in co-op play, but Dead space does it because it wouldn’t make any sense to do otherwise! In space no one waits for your long paused decisions in order to maul you. That might be a bit extreme but this was the first game of this kind that I played that stripped the ability to pause it, pick your weapon carefully and then proceed. You have to think on your feet or die trying. Getting back on point, the actual menus are multi-layered holograms that just pop up wherever you need and actually shed light on the environment which I thought was an awesome detail. Audio and video messages not to mention any ship controls are all holograms as well and it really gives you an idea of how cool the technology is on this ship. The shopping which I mentioned in caps at the beginning of this paragraph is pretty cool too. Picture a robotic version of the merchant from RE4 and you pretty much got the idea of it. Cool thing is you can buy armor upgrades and actually see them applied to your character as well as buy, sell, store and hand in schematics to get upgrades, etc. It’s been done before, but it works VERY well in Dead Space. Another interesting thing is the workbench. It’s separate than the shopping center so you have to look out for them but you can use the work bench to upgrade such things as your suit’s oxygen capacity, gun stats, armor stats, etc. This was very cool and it’s also nice because if you don’t want to use it, you don’t have to. It’s possible to beat the game without it, though you’d only be making it harder on yourself seeing its not very complex what so ever (which is a good thing).
I think that is about it. I think this is an amazing title that is completely worth the $20. I would suggest exploring this game’s story so you are ready for the next one because it is the same main character.
So are you guys ready for the spoiler? Don’t read past till you beat the game.
Seriously,,
The first letter of every mission in the game spells: Nicole is Dead
Enjoy!

Dead Space is quite possibly the most violent video game ever made and I have met a few people who think it has one of the best end bosses of all time. I would have to somewhat agree on both counts. The question is not should you play Dead Space, it is can you play Dead Space and this has nothing to do with hardware (which is very demanding) but more about if you can hack it. It is extremely scary and ferocious. The aliens in this game kill you by ripping you apart and can only be killed by ripping them apart. Torso shots only slow them down. You need to use laser type weapons or saws to cut their limbs off. All of this while walking slowly around a damaged mining ship that is infested with these things. Strong story driven game with some amazing level designs that takes survival horror and gives it a fresh injection of dread.
Pros:
The sheer overwhelming horror of it all
Alien attacks are very scary
Defeating the aliens is heart pounding
Good story
End boss battle
Cons:
Some levels have backtracking
There is a fair amount of repetition

This is probably one of the best games i`ve ever played. The mood it sets will keep you on edge right up until the end. The enviroments look fantasic and the controls are very user friendly and are picked up quick. Playing this game was like being trapped in the best scifi/horror flick i`ve seen in the last two years. If you like games like silent hill or resident evil, this game is for you. There is enough creepiness, guns and gore to make this title one you`ll want to play over and over again. Great job by EA

It’s a great game for someone over 17 years. It’s scary but will keep you on your feet wanting to see what happens. The story is great although based on a couple of sci fi movies( event horizon meets alien)but the gore is great and will scare the heck out of you. The light effects and sound effects are great and looks excellent overall. It’s a must have for space missions gone bad sci fi fans.

This is one of the best space horror works I’ve ever encountered. The ambience is incredible and the visuals are just breathtaking. So much thought and care was put into all the little details on the ship, and hte plot is great too. I really hope that EA makes a sequel to this.

Dead Space is an incredible game filled with terror and intrigue around every corner. I do not regret for a second buying this game, it’s right up my alley.
I’ve always liked the fear effect that can come from games. I still remember brief moments in Gears of War(the old factory scene) and Dino Crisis that actually caused my heart to skip a few beats. After reading a little bit on Dead Space, I decided this one might deliver a few scary moments. I’ll only play it with headphones on in a dark room, it adds to the terror immensely!
The sounds and noises you hear along the way create a very disturbing mood, but one that fits the game perfectly. With the sound turned down, I can only imagine the game being a lot more ‘tame’.
The creatures you encounter are very eerie in the manner that they move through the levels, especially when one can still lunge at you after you’ve, say, severed its legs off.
The storyline is a lot of fun to follow along to as well. An interesting and intriguing background on what happened to the ship keeps you moving through the narrow hallways and dark rooms with panicked curiosity.
And lastly the new and altered extra’s in the game force you to apply a whole different style of thought process to your environment. Rooms with zero-gravity let you leap from floor to ceiling effortlessly, a limited but NECESSARY stasis module let’s you slow down anything that moves too quick for you, and kinesis allows you to move obstructions with ease, or even throw objects at attacking creatures.
Anyone who loves a game with horror elements mustn’t miss Dead Space. It delivers with an eerie presentation full of terrifying attacks, disturbing noises, and creepy areas and settings. Just remember: always be watching your back, because you can bet something else in the shadows is too.

As you may have guessed, I love this game. It took me about a year to finish it though… Huh? I know this is weird. Here is what happened.
I bought this game used about 2 weeks after it came out. I got to the part where you are attacked by the indestructible creature in the room where you basically have to just survive for about a minute without getting killed by enemies spawning from every corner of the room. I was so terrified that I thought my heart was going to explode out of my chest. I returned the game to Gamestop and got Far Cry 2 instead which I proceeded to spend the next 40 hours or so playing and loving.
Everytime I went to Gamestop, I would look at Dead Space and be tempted to pick it up again. Finally, about 9 months later, the game was selling for $20 and I picked it up again. I was hooked. I played the game all the way through and when I beat the last boss, I started the game again and there is a new Game + feature where you get to keep all your weapons and attributes from the last game. This is an awesome game that did not get the sales it deserves. It will be getting a sequel though which is awesome.
Graphics: The graphics on this game are simply very impressive. One of the reasons why I was not interested in this game when the previews first started appearing was the fact that it appeared to just be a corridor shooter. Didn’t look very interesting really. Good reviews started coming out and this led to my initial purchase of the game. It really looks amazing. You really feel like you are on a ship all alone fighting legion of unstoppable demons. Character models are amazing. Isaac’s movements, reload animations and finishing moves are totally kick ass.
Gameplay: This is the perfect horror shooter game. Better than RE5 as you get to shoot and run–one of the dumbest holdouts for RE5 BTW. That being said, this game is pretty much a copy of the all of the elements of RE4. Yes I did not make a mistake. This game is closer to RE4 that RE5 as this game has no coop element, and RE5 threw out the merchant element. In Dead Space, You have the merchant(the store), you get items from crates, you have an inventory function where you have to conserve space for weapons, ammo and health, there are a variety of cool guns–all of which can be upgrades with increased capacity, firepower, etc.
Overall: Get this game. I recommend playing this game on Easy the first time through as it does get pretty hairy having creatures attack from all sides and no way to pause to check inventory. BTW, that brings up pretty much the only negative. The New Game + feature only allows you to play the same difficult level. Why not let you try playing on hard with the best armor and guns??

I wasnt really too sure about this game when I first started it. Heck, i never heard of Dead Space until a famliy member bought it. But the game really punched me in the face and proved me wrong when it unexpectedly had me in suspense and in caution mode nearly every second of the game.
The game takes place in Space obviously and that is what makes it even scarier, because its not like you can really go anywhere becuase space does have its limits, meaning you can’t breathe, can’t really move that well and your powerless. So youre stuck on this ship with a handful of survivors who go mad and kill themselves along with extremely creepy monsters that will make you jump.
The monsters arent that bad, but they are very annoying. You will come across some that will run at you atrociously, its freaken creepy!
It is SOOO dark in 80% of this game and you have just a tini tiny flashlight to guide you. you’ll see shawdows, you’ll hear things, you’ll see glimpses of monsters, The music is beyond fitting for this game becuase it will make the hair the on neck stand, You’ll come across some audio files of people who use to live asking for help and weeping and being terrified of dying. They are really cool to listen to, because its like youre getting a small taste of what really happened before your character arrived on the ship.
The graphics are nice, i wouldn’t say pefect, but you will have chances of getting to view space and it’s nice.
The only annoying thing about this game is the fact that when your fellow companions contact you, their big display screen is right in the way and it distracts you. however you can make him aim, and their display window will minumize, but other than that, this game is the scariest i’ve ever played. EVER.
There are SOME goodies you can unlock afterwards, like a Better Armor, money and a few power nodes that help you upgrade your weapons, armor, oxygen tank and other things. Sadly i think those are the only two things you can get after completing the game.
it is WORTH buying, can’t stress that enough.

I received Dead Space a long time ago but I didn’t open it until now
(like many games I own) after I started playing RE5 and I must say my first impressions are the same ones of many people, the movement in RE5 is so bad and awkward, and the inability of not moving while pointing and recharge is so lame, and the only explanation from the developers is that you can’t move to give more tension to game, to give more horror feeling, but immediately I thought “that’s so lame! why can’t they come up with more creative ways to scare and amaze me?”
And it’s the complete opposite! It’s awesome!
), and it only helps to create the feeling that the RE5 developers wanted to achieve but they didn’t. Also you can move when you are pointing and shooting although is not a 1st shooter moving it gives you freedom, it gives a sense of reality, turning around corners with weapon at hand and lighting the corridor to protect yourself and bam! a necromorph! And maybe Isaac’s movement is not so great, that’s because he is human and a normal person, and his enemies are monsters willing to destroy him, and even so if you are clever enough you can maneuver around them to get a better position for attacking. And makes me wonder how pathetic you feel like Chris Redfield, a giant pile of muscles that can’t reload or shoot while moving and fighting against retarded zombie like persons that are slower than you all in broad daylight, that’s not scary, that’s so lame!.
That’s when I decided to open my old brand new Dead Space
They created new ways to scare the hell out of you, to always keep you nervous and alert, it gives you the feeling of never being safe(even in the rooms where there is the save point), the same feeling that a good survival horror game should have, everything from scary creatures, psychological terror, screams, creepy sounds, creepy lighting. Along with the zero gravity and the vacuum areas makes you feel that you really are in the Ishimura by yourself. And also how the missions are delivered to you via holograms is very clever, it really never stops you never get your mind out of the Ishumura(unless you turn of the console of course

I got this game the day it came out for PS3. I definitely have enjoyed it a lot and think it’s a heavy contender for game of the year. Some reviews have said it’s too easy. I guess that depends how hardcore of a gamer you are. I guess I would consider myself a casual gamer, as I don’t have time with work and a family to play all the time, but when I do play, it’s games like this that I really enjoy.
The graphics and sound make for a really immersive experience, especially if you have good surround sound. There were numerous times I had goose bumps and was actually spooked a few times. Also, you are selling yourself short if you aren’t set up for HDTV with the quality of games today. Playing this game on anything but 1080p is a disjustice to the game and your personal experience.
This game adds some different skills to the typical first person shooter. I really like the zero gravity. And the storyline is top notch and molds seamlessly with the game. It took me about 16 hours of gameplay to beat it, but I wasn’t in a big hurry either. I could play it for 16 more hours!

I bought a PS3 just so I could play Resident Evil 5, but this was my first PS3 game to buy, and it was great. Similar to RE5, better in some ways and not as good in others. You arrive in a rather cryptic settling, acutely aware of the desolation that space has to offer. All around you are the endless shades of night, and you, unaware of anything save a crippled ship and the task before you, step inside to take a little looksy.
A few minutes later that little look turns out to be one of the worst decisions you’ve ever made in your life.
From the beginning, Dead Space is one of those games that get under your skin. The sights are beautiful and the sounds are horrific in only the best of ways, leading you to jump when the game wants you to jump and to panic when it asks you to panic. This means it wraps you around its little pixilated finger, asks you to marry it, and you can’t help but say yes. Really, how could you? Graphically, it is a love affair that just keeps getting better and those are the best kinds.
Weapon-wise, the game is lovely as well, because you get a number of weapons to play with AND because you gain abilities as you move through the game. The weapons are upgradeable as well AND can be adjusted to shoot in different configurations, making them more valuable as you move forward. You get the basic set-up stuff (power, reload, capacity, and some other odds-and-ends depending on the blaster), and these basics allow each weapon to stay in play long than you would think. The abilities are lovely as well – you get things that allow you to slow time somewhat, the ability to telekinetically grab things and throw them around, and those are only starter toys. I personally like that.
I also like the little touches that are done with health and with abilities. The suit you are wearing has colors that display how much of something you have, allowing you to see your health without an ugly bar cluttering the screen. You also have a map feature that is projected into the air, and this allows a better way to examine the map than previous flat variations.
All of this leads, of course, to conflicts with things that are a tad intimidating and sometimes overwhelming. They move FAST when they want to, can tear into you with ease as soon as you think you have things under control, and they don’t exactly die when you ask them to die. Taking a head still leaves a body, taking an arm leaves other limbs, taking a leg still leaves a beastie with a bad attitude, taking – you get the picture. They hide well too, reminding me a little the type of friends Colonial Marines seemed to make. The fights are lovely things as well : one firefight in zero-gravity makes you wonder why you haven’t been popping off rounds like that all of your life.
As far as the negative reviews that have been popping up in magazines, pay them little heed. All horror games (with the exception of some Resident Evil titles) have always been underappreciated, and low scoring comes with the world of fighting terrors. I’ve often wondered if magazines find the games a tad bit difficult for weak bladders accustomed to playing the same drab titles over and over again, or if it is something personal that we do not know about. Regardless, this is one title that is a MUST BUY for the 360 and delivers on all fronts.
I cannot give it more acclaim than I am now.

I don’t have a lot of time to write so I’ll just say this, Dead Space is awesome. I just finished the book Martyr and I don’t have my copy of my Dead Space game around so I decided to buy it again. This story is so complex I needed to finish it and I couldn’t wait. But this games is one of the best ever made. Great graphics, atomosphere, music, voice acting, and horror. If you haven’t played this game, play it. I bout it twice for pete’s sake, you can at least buy it once.

In terms of survival horror games, Resident Evil 4 had easily worn the crown in terms of scaring the crap out of you. Key word there was had. Dead Space is by and far one of the most frightening video games you will ever play, taking the idea of “monsters on a space ship” and upping the ante in nearly every department. You play as Isaac Clarke, an engineer dispatched to the ship Ishimura after contact has been lost. It doesn’t take long to learn that the crew of the Ishimura have been mutated into horrible creatures, and it’s up to you to wreak bloody havoc upon them and learn what happened. First and foremost, Dead Space features some of the most horiffic creature designs you’ll catch in a video game. These Necromorphs aren’t all that easy to take down either, leading up to some just plain awesome boss battles to boot. What Dead Space manages to accomplish in terms of innovation is also very much worth noting, as the traditional elements like a health meter are featured right on your character via a meter going down his spine, and telling how much ammo you have left can be seen when you raise your weapon into position. Elements like these make Dead Space an all the more immersive gaming experience, and the game’s enthralling story only adds to it. Technically speaking, Dead Space is a marvel in terms of graphics and sound design, offering so many moments of brilliance amidst the horror. The game is blood-curdlingly violent, and being able to improvise using your surroundings during battle adds to this as well. The ship itself is wonderfully designed and gives off a feeling of claustrophobic dread; all of which helps add up to make Dead Space a brilliant and immersive survival horror experience. If there’s any flaws to be found, it’s that the mission objectives can get repetitive, but other than that, Dead Space is nearly flawless. All in all, you are unlikely to play any better, or scarier, survival horror games now or in the near future, and even if survival horror isn’t really your thing, you should definitely check out Dead Space regardless.

I love this game so much! It’s a blast from start to finish(too bad it’s not longer). The inovations they made and origanality of everything is AMAZING! The blood and gore it extensive but tastfull(well not really but it doesn’t seem overboard). The game isn’t perfect but it’s close. For example some of the guns are totally useless(in my opinion) like the line gun and the contact beam and all but one of the alternate firing modes for the guns I never used(i forgot they were there). Also the map could use a little work especially when your in zero gravety and can’t figure out where to go(this only happened like once or twice though). Other than that it’s probably the funest game ive played for the ps3 yet(i just got a ps3 about a month ago though). I’m really hoping for a DEAD SPACE 2!!!
And all these people that gave one star reviews can’t get past the asteroid part(i admit it’s not my favorite part). If you can’t get past it restart and play on easy mode it took me 3 times to beat it as aposted to like 13 on normal.

Ok, you will see plenty of negative reviews for this game, but looking closely you will see that many of these reviews are cases against SecuROM, the DRM software embedded into this game. There are plenty of people complaining, many with reason and some with pure hatred, against SecuROM. Without negating or supporting their views, I would like to steer away the discussion from the DRM issues and focus instead on the game
One Word: Amazing. Great game, worthy of all the positive reviews many critics have given it. You see, with time it’s easy to grow tired of the same FPS strategy of shooting people over and over by different means or weapons. What Dead Space does is moving FPS into another dimension on genre where is difficult to do any real innovations: What if, instead of shooting people in the head or obliterating them with grenades/explosives, the player will have to dismember its enemies to be more effective? What if we make these enemies one of the most grotesque abominations seen in a game and frame them in a suffocating environment where danger is in every corner and you can never walk easy and unafraid? What if, in top of that, we make you a clumsy, weak and somewhat slow to react and run engineer, not a super-soldier, that would have to make an extra-effort to survive the horrors he is about to face using mostly modified tools and not real weapons? And, to make matters even more interesting, we add a superb soundtrack and all sort of background noises and pain laments that will make you shivers and more often than not jump from your seat and scream Jesus!?
Think the original Alien movie and its superb Nostromo environments and story meet the superb mechanics, gameplay and graphics of Half-Life, meet Doom 3 in steroids and meet horror comic books, all in one package. It had been a long time for me that I hadn’t enjoyed a game so much, you will see that you can’t stop playing it and see how all the conspiracy and the story ends, while enjoying the challenges and increasingly harder-to-kill enemies while perfecting the art of dismembering. I put his game very high on my list of all the FPS games I’ve played, and I see few difficulties for this game to become a classic and be a strong competitor for game of the year awards. Yes, it’s that good
If you can live with SecuROM and don’t mind much this increasingly DRM inanity in every single PC game out there, buy and play this game, you won’t be disappointed. In the other hand, if you can’t stand SecuROM or other invasive DRM methods then forget about it, possibly together with every single great upcoming PC game and seriously think on switching to a console. Or play this game on your X-box, if you have one, but don’t let it pass!

This is the best suspense video game I’ve ever played. You just have to turn off the lights and crank up the volume and get ready for a scary ride.

Before I start reviewing this game, I’d like to apologize to my Amazon friends for my lack of recent reviews. College has been a bigger handful than usual and there was serious medical problems with family (things are back to normal now).
Now to reviewing this beast of a video game. I first read a little about Dead Space when I was in college on the day Halo 3 came out and a friend handed me a video game magazine and I took a strong notice to the (then) up-and-coming Dead Space. I really liked what I saw in that article since it was supposed to be influenced from one of my favorite movies, Event Horizon (Isaac’s helmet even looks like the front of the EH ship). A year passes and I received Dead Space as a gift on my 21st birthday last year and I won’t be parting with it anytime soon. Though it’s pretty obvious from the product description and from customer reviews, this game is REALLY violent and gory. In fact, my best friend’s little brother (whose quite seasoned with video games) said to me “This is the most gruesome video game ever made.”
PLOT
The plot is that a mining ship named the USG Ishimura seems abandoned when the rescue shuttle Kellion approaches the derelict ship. You assume the role of mining engineer Isaac Clarke (homage to sci-fi authors Issac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke) and accompanying you are security officer Zach Hammond and technologist Kendra Daniels. You think you’re on a mission to repair a damaged major component on that ship, but you’ve bitten off WAY MORE than you can chew. The Ishimura is infested with Necromorphs, aliens that kill people and mutate their corpses into sheer abominations of mankind. Unfortunately, there’s no escape pods in the Ishimura and the Kellion got critically damaged, so you’re stuck on this high-tech hell. The Necromorphs are the coolest enemies I’ve ever seen in a horror video game since they’re so ugly, deadly, and creepy; definitely a huge improvement from the typical zombie fare that so banal in the horror game genre. The Necromorphs have many different forms and are bristling with razor-sharp teeth, pointed tentacles, sword-like claws, and other rather hideous appendages that can make quick work of human flesh. The most troublesome Necromorphs have to be the spore-like ones since they’re so numerous and small, they’re difficult to kill en masse unless if you have a blowtorch on hand. The main antagonist of the game is a deranged doctor named Charles Mencer and I assure you that you’ll loathe this guy more than anything since he does everything he can to make it difficult for you to survive on the Ishimura. He messes with life-support systems on certain sections of the ship so you’ll run out of oxygen, he’ll steal launch codes to keep you from potentially escape in a hidden escape craft, and even created a really abhorrent Necromorph that’s impossible to kill; you can blast and beat it until the moon turns green and it won’t die, it just regenerates lost appendages.
VISUALS AND DESIGN
I love the way everything looks in Dead Space. The interior of the Ishimura is really unnerving since it’s bleak and slathered with the remains of its crew. High-tech horror design at its finest. The graphics and movement are very detailed and fluid, they didn’t cut corners in this respect.
TOOLS OF THE TRADE
Since this is a mining ship and not a military ship, you don’t have proper weapons to ensure your survival, you actually use high-tech mining tools to kill the Necromorphs and to me, this is one of the coolest things about the game since killing monsters with a buzz saw or an energy-based ore-cutting tool definitely has a more appalling effect than just offing the creatures with an assault rifle or shotgun. There’s a decent variety of tools appropriate for the job ranging from a plasma cutter (first weapon you’ll get) to a line gun (similar to plasma cutter but has horizontal range of fire and is stronger), a buzz saw, a blowtorch, a plasma rifle, contact beam (energy-blasting device) and my personal favorite, the force gun (fires heavily concentrated blasts of gravity). Since I’ve played this game a lot, I say the four tools that are most appropriate for survival are the plasma cutter, line gun, force gun, and blowtorch. You don’t have to always use your weapons when fighting off Necromorphs; you can shoot off stasis waves, which slow your enemies down and you can dismember them with melee attacks or you can use kinesis to grab objects and hurl them at your enemies. When I kill the Necromorphs, I usually use the conventional method of using my tools’ unique uses, but it’s wiser to use stasis so that you conserve ammo and it’s a lot more gruesome to kill them that way.
UPGRADES AND SHOP
Fortunately, throughout the game, you collect currency and special items which you can use at some shops located throughout the ship to purchase tool ammo, health kits, and upgrades for your mining suit. There’s upgrade benches throughout the ship as well; when you collect power nodes, you can use them to increase the speed, ammo capacity, and power of your tools and you NEED to do this if you want to beat the game. I find both features in this game really cool. These aren’t “safe points,” either; if you’re in the middle of either activity or even saving your game progress, the Necromorphs WILL attack you if they’re in your area.
GAMEPLAY
What’s a video game without gameplay? Fortunately, the gameplay is ace in Dead Space. Controls are perfectly responsive and logical in button layout. The only gripe I have is that the default control is that the movement on the x-axis is inverted, so you’ll have to change that when you start playing the game if you don’t find that comfortable. It’s also really challenging in certain situations other than just killing Necromorphs. There’ll be certain parts of the game where you have to be fast on your feet AND utilize problem-solving skills such as this one level where you have to re-activate a gravity-generating centrifuge in the ship and you have to carefully yet quickly plan your escape out of that area since the path to safety isn’t obvious, there’s no oxygen in that segment of the ship, AND there’s Necromorphs ready to kill you. The game’s “Zero Gravity” feature is really cool; you can jump around in areas you never experienced in any game before and the Necromorphs can travel in zero gravity as well, making your efforts of survival really interesting to say the least.
FINAL WORD
Dead Space is everything a horror and gore-obsessed gamer would want. The violence is over-the-top and the gameplay has enough twists and challenges to make it playable over long periods of time. If you call yourself a fan of the horror game genre or just a gamer who loves action-packed gore, Dead Space will reward you greatly.

Great Game. hours of fun.the only real problems are it would be nice for some online/co-op play and it doesnt save at the most recent stage of the game so you have to repeat alot of stuff. overall great I recommend it for PS3 owners.

I wasnt really interested in Dead Space. It looked like a resident evil rip off, but i started seeing reviews for it and bought it cuz i had not bought a new game in a while. This game has an awesome atmosphere, story, and graphics. I like how you can level up your weapons, suits, abilities, etc.. it makes the game worth playing again, and the fact it has trophies is another bonus. EA is actually starting to make some really great games; hopefully Mirror’s Edge will be awesome too.

Dead Space is the compilation of the creepiest scenes all blended together with monsters and dark, foreboding environments. Isaac, a technician, is tasked to help repair a planet cracker, a massive mining ship. Once aboard, their craft is shortly destroyed, and they find themselvse trapped on a ship filled with monstrous conversions of the crew.
Sound: 11/10. This is where the game makes its biggest bang. The environmentals are so good that you’ll be grateful when you see a monster. The sound of clattering pipes, venting steam, shorting circuits, all so innocuous, yet they manage to create the lions share of the feel. The music is barely secondary to it, helping only to accentuate it.
Graphics: 9/10. Very few bad things can be said about the visuals of this game. The walls and environs are placed and unique. The graffiti is humourous and usnettling in turns. The only flaws deals with interactions and backgrounds, allowing pieces to fall or tumble through, though this is rare.
Gameplay: 9/10. Combat is pleasantly creative, with psionic abilities in the place of industrial equipment, and welders and repair gear as the weaponry. There are very few actual military pieces, with the exception of the pulse rifle. Inventroy is well set up and challenging to juggle. Make sure to download the free Obsidian Suit, which will make life far simpler. The HUD design used in this is also incredibly creative, and a cheery, bright counterpoint to the blood and death.
Story: 9/10. The premise is well thought out, and makes sense in context. The story is peeled back like layers of an onion. Theres enough facts and logs placed around that can fill the gaps, but leave the main storyline vague, which as everyone knows, makes for better horror than nailing down every nuance and detail.
Only a handful of drawbacks exist. The “store” is oddly placed, and an unusual setup, considering most 7-11′s don’t sell military hardware. The bodies are static, meaning that when you walk through one, it bursts like an over ripe fruit, and results in a game of kick the head, which follows for quite a distance if you can’t walk around it. The HUD, whose praises I was just singing, is next to impossible to read in some circumstances.
Overall, the game is one of the best horror adventure games ever made, on the level of the original Silent Hill and Resident Evil, and will make you jump or start with fright, and set your heart racing with nothing more than the sound of a dropping pipe.

So my SO picked up Dead Space shortly after it’s release as this is a game both of us (avid horror fans) have been waiting for since we saw some promotion for it at Comic-Con.
I’d certainly say it’s like an interactive horror movie. Like the other reviewers have said, it’s a little bit of Aliens, a little bit of Event Horizon and I’d even go so far as to add a little bit of 28 Days Later in. Sounds like a fun time.
The story of the game is simple. You’re Issac Clarke, an engineer sent in with a team to find out what happened to the USG Ishimura (which has failed to report in). However, upon arrival, you realize this is a bad plan, especially once you see no human life forms aboard and a lot of blood smeared here and there. And then things go from bad to worse.
The crew of the Ishimura have been infected with a very bad alien race that would love to add someone like Issac to their ranks. Your weapons are simple, and headshots aren’t the preferred method of disposal (since these creatures will just keep coming). The key to your survival is ‘strategic dismemberment’. Cut off an arm, they swing with the other one. Kneecap them and they will pull themselves towards you with their arms. Blow their head off and they won’t fall down. Slice and dice like they were potatoes and you get the idea. Also, just because a dead body is lying on the ground doesn’t mean it’s not going to get back up….sometimes you have to curb stomp that stiff to make sure they don’t get up again!
Graphically, this game is impressive with the look and feel of a derelict spaceship. You walk down halls filled with dread because you don’t know what’s going to either drop out of the air vents (where the creatures like to hide) or pop out from around the corner. The gore factor is high in this game, from fountains of blood to the physics used for the bodies. Kick a dismembered arm and watch that part roll across the hall. Kick a corpse and they move as a ragdoll would. And let’s not mention the flies….after all, there’s dead bodies everywhere.
Soundwise, I give this game some high marks. The voice acting isn’t cheesy (*cough*Resident Evil 1*cough*) and the sounds of creatures skittering about in the airducts is enough to make you want to get goosebumps. I’ve not had the chance to hear this in 5.1 yet, but I’m sure I would probably hide under a blanket if I did.
One aspect of the game I haven’t seen anyone mention yet is that in a couple of ‘missions’, Issac must combat the creatures in ZERO GRAVITY. This was especially fun for me to watch. Cut up a creature in midair and watch his remains just kind of float by their own inertia.
Overall, I think this is a fantastic addition to your game library if you are a fan of the sci-fi/horror genre. It’s got an abandoned space ship, aliens, strategic dismemberment, blood, gore, claustrophobia, and should manage to give you some good scares this Halloween season.
It definitely earns a place in the Survival Horror genre alongside Resident Evil and Silent Hill.

Known primarily for overdoing a franchise with multiple releases (see the endless yearly outings of sports titles, EA went a bit against the grain and released 2 original IP’s in the fall of last year: Dice’s Mirror’s Edge and EA Redwood’s Dead Space. Whereas the former was at times fun but other times frustrating, Dead Space is just top-of-the-line from head to toe. Everything about the game feels perfectly balanced and even small nitpick worthy issues can’t stop it from being an exhilarating ride…at least during the first time.
Story: In the near future, such ships exist called “planet crackers” which essentially grab gigantic chunks out of planets and mine them for resources and minerals. When the top ship, the USG Ishimura, goes silent and no contact can be made, in comes Isaac Clarke, an engineer sent in to what they think is just a communication equipment problem. Get in, fix, get out except the ship’s crew has changed and not for the better as they’re disgusting and deformed creatures hell bent on seeing you dead, often in the most gruesome manner possible.
There’s really only 2 complaints I can level at Dead Space’s story: one, we’re told to sympathize with Isaac thanks to a sidestory involving his girlfriend Nicole only Isaac doesn’t say a single word throughout the entire story and makes him a bit more autonomous and hard to sympathize with. The second is that the game is essentially a glorified fetch quest only instead of collecting items, you’re fixing stuff. Literally every chapter you’ll receive reports from either Kendra or Hammond, your shipmates, that something on the ship needs to be fixed lest something bad happen. A chapter where your completely cut off from everybody would’ve heightened the tension and made you go “now what?” but otherwise, you’re just errand boy. However thanks to the graphics and the pacing, you’ll be quite hooked into the story.
Graphics: What makes Dead Space such an immersive and effective game is the graphics since the ship just FEELS possible, as if this thing can actually exist. It’s a lot more effective when you take into account the layout, lighting, various facilities and levels and everything from detail in the environments, the gore effects and especially that one part during chapter 4 involving the bridge makes you go “holy ****”. Larger detail is lost more farther away things are and bodies on the floor have a weird ragdoll quality and it’s not uncommon to start shuffling bodies with your feet like they’re mannequins.
Sound/Music: Equally impressive is the sound mix from the roars, screeches, pipes and cans dropping from…somewhere, this is the game to have if you have surround sound as the sound mix will easily make you paranoid about everything. The voice acting is one of those functional types where no one really excels in their roles but they don’t stand out in the awfulness either. Primarily the voice acting comes from Kendra and Hammond who do good jobs for your voice characters. All that’s heard from Isaac is his yells during hits, breathing when he runs and being in air vacuums.
Gameplay: The first big thing Dead Space does is have no HUD displays anywhere on screen, well at least typical ones. There’s no Halo-esque radar or ammo counter or a shield meter in the old-fashioned sense but rather everything’s on Isaac’s body. His health is a bar that runs up his spine separated into segments, his Statis (slow motion for specific things such as enemies or equipment) is a half-circle while ammo counters are displayed on top of the weapon in a display. Even cutscenes and character meetings don’t have a separate cutscene but either come through holographic projections or brief moments where camera shows an action from somewhere else. This helps with the game and makes one wonder why most game designers don’t use it more.
Instead of traditional weaponry a la shotguns and assault rifles, Isaac carries engineer-type equipment from plasma cutters to rippers and the equipment feels like what one would use in their fixing duties so it’s nice that they’re functional for killing some beasts. The core of the game is to dismember your enemy, essentially take them apart piece by piece. Take their legs off and make em crawl or take their arms away and leave them attackless. Of course knowing how best to dismember is key since some actually change should you do something and screw you over even more. But with flamethrowers, pulse rifles and melee attacks at your disposal, you’re more than well-equipped and that’s what makes the game work: it’s not difficult per se a la Ninja Gaiden but rather it’s an even matchup. You against them and not feel handicapped by anything.
With kinesis which acts similar to Half-Life 2′s gravity gun where you can grab distant objects or move big things you couldn’t otherwise move, there’s also the aforementioned stasis which temporarily slows time down for an enemy which is fun since it’s for a specific enemy so the annoying one can be slowed while you deal with the lesser types at full speed. Another of the more funner aspects is zero G. Just aim and if you can jump, you’ll go flying which’ll get you either on the ceiling, walls and all over. It’s incredibly fun and having an enemy flying at you is a bit intense. The segments where there’s no air are also great since the sound is drastically cut down save for muffled gunfire and yelling from Isaac.
My one complaint is that the game isn’t as amazing the second time since it becomes a bit more predictable. “Oh, this is where I get ambushed so better go this way and do that” and since some of the achievements are most definately multiple playthroughs needed, it doesn’t make it chore-like but it drags it down ever so slightly. Whereas Mirror’s Edge frequently had great moments mixed in with completely off-the-rails segments and gameplay moments, there’s very little that breaks Dead Space. It’s not “scary” per se and won’t make you lose sleep but it’s an intense ride.

This game made me jump like crazy. It was better than a scary movie. it gets you moving and just can’t stop playing

This game is a must have for ps3 owners. The game is creepy and can get scary from time to time so people under 18 shouldn’t play this game.

This is basically a mix between Resident Evil 4, Doom 3 and Aliens (movie). The game is freaking scary, and very very creepy.
The visuals and art style are amazing which is important in a horror game like this I feel and this game does both well, everything is very well thought out, all of your menus display off the main characters suit rather than on screen, making it a little strange at first but it only pulls you in more.
The sound is even better, you really feel on edge as you walk through the halls with eerie music playing, something banging on the walls or falling off a desk, you’re just waiting for something to rush in and scare the heck out of you. And when it does it’s aim shoot and hope what your shooting at kills the thing. Headshots aren’t the most effective in this it can be the worst thing you can do actually, the monster will flip out and go berserk taking more shots than before.

Dead Space is a great survival horror shooter that you can’t pass up. As you have heard this game borrows heavily from many titles from both cinema and gaming. This works to this games advantage in so many ways. This game really sucks you in to the point where you become totally absorbed and immersed in your surroundings.
The gameplay is excellent as there are many different functions that can be utilized using the controller. Anti-gravity is definitely a stand out feature on this game. There is nothing else like it out there. Combat is also a great feature that is made a lot of fun by using the dissecting feature. Enemies are hard to take down as they are fast and have thick skin. There are a few weapons to choose from and all have their pros and cons on individual enemy types. There are a few puzzles scattered about the game that make for a fun change of pace.
Graphics and sound on this title are some of the best to date. The main characters costume is truly an awesome sight to behold on the screen. The enemies are scary and disgusting which makes you want to kill them ASAP. A few reviews mention that the game gets predictable after awhile. Although you will get a sense of when an enemy is going to enter the scene due to a cue via scary music, you will still be jolted quite often as they don’t always come from the same areas as some say. The music and sound effects are critical in making this game as great as it is.
The storyline is another plus. You are basically spending most of the game trying to get your ship up and running. This entails a lot of running around trying to perform various tasks while fending of the Necromorphs. This game was put together perfectly. I can tell that they spent a lot of time and effort on this game to make it the best they could. It paid off bigtime! I’m really impressed by this one. It keeps my interest whereas a lot of other games in the same genre can’t even come close. It’s hard to put the controller down on this one. It’s truly a beautiful game in every aspect.
I have nothing negative regarding this game except that it would be nice to see another human being every now and then (that isn’t dead) as this game has a very isolated and claustrophobic feel to it. Dead Space can make you feel a little jumpy right after you play it, especially at night. That’s the power of a great survival horror title. It can really give you an adrenaline boost every now and then. Dead Space is probably only a half star lower than Fallout 3 and Bioshock imo. You won’t regret buying this one.

Estare esperando DEAD SPACE 2

EA’s “Dead Space” is an absolutely stunning experience from start to finish and without doubt would have been my personal ‘Game of the Year’ in 2008 had I actually played it upon its initial release. Better late than never though, right?
Sure, by now you’re well familiar with the hype and know that it reviewed very well but if you’re still on the fence about this one do not hesitate to make the purchase – especially now that this game can be found at bargain pricing (under 20 dollars). If you have a HD Display (720p and up) as well as a decent surround sound system you are most certainly in for a treat. Forget the screenshots and videos you may have seen – the game has to be experienced in motion to really experience how rich the quality of the visual/auditory design is. At its core, “Dead Space” is a sci-fi survival horror game with tones reminiscent of such films as the “Aliens” series, “Event Horizon” and “The Black Hole.” Gameplay wise there’s plenty of homage to titles such as “Bioshock” and “Resident Evil” with its own unique twists on genre conventions. Overall the experience is grim, dark, full of tension, and at the end of the day – extremely satisfying with solid design and controls and unique innovations to gameplay (the cookie crumb map tool, UI interface, etc).
Playing the game on Normal difficulty took me about 15 hours to complete. It can be finished in less time but I like to take my time exploring every nook and cranny. Do keep in mind that this game is extremely gory, with plenty of disturbing imagery and sounds not to mention frightening throughout. If you can handle such content then I can’t recommend this title highly enough.

I just finished the PC version of this game and must say it’s one of the best games I played in a long time. My favorites being the first Dues EX, FEAR, Bioshock, the first Far Cry, and now, Dead Space.
This is a survival horror game in which you must make it off the ship. The game is scary and will have you jumping, right up there with the likes of FEAR. Although, in my opinion, FEAR is the scarier game.
The graphics are gorgeous, the mist, the ship details, the inventory, the audio and video logs, all geared to create an eerie dead ship atmosphere are nicely done. If you played Bioshock and loved the graphics, you’ll love this game.
And the best thing about the graphics is that they don’t strain your system like Crysis does. I ran this game at the highest settings at 1280×1024 resolution and never had a slowdown or hiccup. My system specs are a core 2 Quad Q6600 oc to 2.9, 4gig of RAM, Creative’s Fatality X-Fi Pro Gamer soundcard, and a single ATI HD4850 video card on Windows Vista 64.
The ambient sounds in this game are amazing, the low voices all around, the movement and falling items in the distant, weapons fire, all add to the atmosphere. I typically use head phones when gaming, as I only have a stereo speaker setup, and the sounds were amazing. Man, I can only imagine what this game would sound like with a multi-speaker setup as the game seems to make excellent use of positional audio. Definitely adds to the eeriness of the game.
There have been some complaints about the controls on the PC version, but I had no such problems with using the WSAD keys of my keyboard for movement. As for mouse lag, once I adjusted the in-game sensitivity, everything ran silky smooth.
This game uses the FOV (field of view) perspective, as opposed to the first person shooter perspective (FPS). Think Lost Planet. To me this gave the game an edginess as I always had that feeling of looking over my shoulder all the time, which again, added to the eeriness of the game.
Weapons, you start out with a basic plasma cutter, but then have to purchase other weapons, upgrades, and gear as you progresses. I’m guessing this was put in to make you manage your resources. Choose wisely.
The story line here is great and there are some surprises along the way. Don’t be lured into thinking things are too easy, it gets tougher the more you progress. You’ll also want to do some exploring if you want to survive the game. It also has a great ending as well.
One suggestion I have would be to get the DVD “Dead Space – Downfall” which is the prequel to the game. The DVD gives some perspective to the game, and, also offers some cheat codes, which I missed, so I can’t say what they offer.
This game has a lot to offer, has great replay ability, definitely worth the $49 dollar price tag, and gets my vote for Game Of The Year!
Now, for those DRM critics, first off, you can play the game without having to load the CD!!! Crysis Warhead also works the same way!!! No, I don’t like DRM as well, but it is what it is, and thus far hasn’t caused me any harm; but then again, I don’t reinstall my OS like a hundred times a year.
To those who’ve not played the game, but rated it low simply because the game uses DRM…How does that say anything about the “actual” game…especially if you’ve not played it?
If you can put aside your “hatred” of DRM, this game is AWSOME! Period.

I’m very late to the party with this review, so I’ll keep it informal and short…
I know I raved about BioShock, and I think my raves were warranted. But I compared my Bioshock experience to Resident Evil 4. I guess that I didn’t completely remember how exhilarated and immersed I was in RE4, because I started Dead Space this past weekend, and I never felt like I was going to have a heart attack playing Bioshock like I did in Dead Space.
Everything in Dead Space screams terror, and everything in Dead Space is presented terrifically! You’re team has just boarded the USS Ishimura in deep space…er…I mean Dead Space. It’s like a busy space station that supports a mining colony. Let’s put it this way: it’s supposed to have a pretty decent sized crew. But something’s wrong…there doesn’t seem to be anyone on board. After about 5 minutes on the ship you’re separated from your team, and you are rudely introduced to what is wrong.
The creatures in Dead Space are scary. When they’re not scary they’re disturbing. When they’re not disturbing they’re viciously ruthless. The background sounds are creepy send chills down your spine. The background music is orchestrated precisely, and build you right up to a heart attack when the action starts. The layout and map of the ship are super realistic.
You play as a third person as Isaac Clark, and you wear an upgradeable suit that shows your health via illuminated LED lights on the spine of the suit. Very cool. You have a holographic HUD that you can bring up at any time to show your inventory, map & objectives. There are save stations throughout the game positioned almost everywhere you start hoping for one.
Dead Space is just awesome! And to top it off I bought my first Dualshock 3 Wireless Controller, and what a cool thing I’ve been depriving myself of. The first affect was when I stomped on something. I never thought that a silly controller vibration could add much to the gaming experience….but don’t knock it til ya try it certainly applies here.
Gotta say, I’m not sure that watching Dead Space: Downfall first was such a great idea. It was actually kind of a spoiler; I kinda had to play like I was able to watch a log of the Ishimura’s events before landing on it.
Sick. Game. Did you like the movie Aliens? Do you like to be scared? Add this to your cart, but prepare for an adventure that’s perhaps more intense than any movie you’ve ever watched or any game that you’ve ever played.

Definitely the scariest game I have ever played. Decent storyline and voice acting as well. weapons are scarce, but it makes you want to play the game over again to obtain all of them. Probably the best aspect of the game is the sound. It definitely creates an atmosphere of isolation and hopelessness.
Pros:
The mood really makes this game great. There really is this air of hopelessness and isolation in some of these levels. They really put a lot of time into detail too, and I feel like some of these sets are really underappreciated. Whether its the bloody handprint on the wall, or ceilings covered in undechiperable scripture, it really plays up to the deep s*** that Isaac Clarke is in.
Its also a smart shooter too. I love the idea of dismembering the creatures in order to kill them in the quickest way possible. It definitely separates the game from standard first person shooters.
If you play this game on hard mode, you barely get any ammo, thus making it a more of a survival game than shootem up. I recall that playing this game the first time through on hard mode was almost like one big blur, because I found myself running away more often than being able to defend myself with weapons.
Cons:
At one point, you find out that you have to return to previously traversed areas. Although this is minimal, it can feel like “been there, done that” with some levels and monsters.
This kind of goes although with the first point, but there was a lack of creativity in some levels towards the end of the game, and I felt almost desensitized because I wasn’t seeing anything new, or I was tired of going into rooms full of monsters, with the only goal of trying to survive(I know, I know, that is the point of this game).
I would have turned off the option of not allowing Isaac to see where he is supposed to go via Path Display. There is this option on the controller(push down on R3 i believe) to have Isaac display the path he needs to take in order to complete a task. This makes the game too linear and easy.(the game is still somewhat linear even when not using Path Display)

I purchased Dead Space on release date. I started playing again last week (a year after purchase) and am hooked all over again. Scary monsters and great pacing are it’s biggest strengths.
Update: My hopes have been answered.

WOW! I must admit, I enjoy playing video games but unfortunately only for a few hours a week as time permits. Of all the games that I have played I have NEVER played a game that keeps me on the edge of my seat. The setting, plot and dialog are just right…as if you are playing a movie. The “creatures” that you fight don’t keep swarming at you every second which i believe enhances the tension to the game. Without giving you any spoilers your environment ranges from well lit to barely lit with flickering lights…..SUSPENSE! I also enjoy the aspect of the game where you need to find items to not only enhance your health but to assist you in completing your objectives….happy hunting!!

I’ve been anticipating this game for quite some time, and I must say that it definitely lives up to the hype! Completely immersive and beautiful looking environments, cool upgradeable weapons/ gear, and scary as hell! I highly recommend this game, it’s a blast!

After reading reviews that Dead Space was the second coming of the original Resident Evil, I decided I’d give it a try. Review sites were claiming it to be “the scariest game evar!” Hell, when I picked the game up from a local store I was boldly told, “within two minutes of gaining control of your character, you will jump out of your skin!” Eagerly, I rushed home, ready for my next jolt of adrenaline. So, it was with a pair of rubber underwear (I kid…or do I?) and some excitement that I set out to see what dark terrors Dead Space would contain.
Turns out there’s not much here we haven’t seen before. No, I didn’t jump two minutes into the game…and in fact the first chapter felt pretty tame. Monsters pop out of vents or can be seen in the distance, usually followed by a loud “DUN!” from the soundtrack. Maybe I’ve grown so hardened from my years of playing horror games that the thrills in Dead Space don’t amount to much. I’m also wondering who these reviewers are. If Dead Space is so terrifying to them, I’d hate to see what’d happen if they got their hands on F.E.A.R. or Condemned, for example, two games that have made me jump out of my skin.
Things improve as the story continues, though, with some disturbing images (usually involving a crazed survivor) and some stick with me, even now. The game does improve on its terror level, the further in you get and there are some shocking moments, both in terms of graphic depictions but also in a “holy crap, I’m being dragged by a tentacle” way. But, as a personal opinion, I’ve never really been fond of the silent protagonist. And here we have not only Isaac, the mute, but Isaac the faceless since he’s always holed up behind some mask. Sure there is a personal story here for him, what with his girlfriend stuck on the ship somewhere, but it never really clicked for me simply because Isaac felt like a doll and not a real person.
This isn’t to say Dead Space is a bad game, just the opposite! I had an absolute blast playing it because what it does, it does exceedingly well. The weapons are never your cliched space marine-type fare, which brings a fresh feel to the game. They can be “leveled up” via work benches, and you can really design both your suit and your weapons to fit your play style. Dead Space also controls amazingly well and you’ll never feel like the game is hampering you by horrible movement. The graphics are pretty damn awesome, especially in terms of the grotesque monster designs (which remind me of The Thing) and the animations. The concept of “strategic dismembering” is also a fun little twist of the genre, as you’ll find yourself blowing the hell out of their limbs, just to keep them from coming at you.
I also appreciate how each level feels completely different from the last and EA has truly made the Ishimura come alive. When I first heard that the game took place on a ship, I was worried. Usually that means the same old corridors and bad level design, but here it means a fully realized space ship. Breaking up the action are sections taking place in zero-G areas, which are great, and some puzzles that require you to utlize the environment.
All in all, and even though I don’t share the opinion that it’s the scariest game ever, Dead Space is a terrific game. The plot is very intriguing and pulls you along, but it’s everything else that really adds up to making it what it is. In the end, Dead Space feels more like Aliens than Alien, and that ain’t shabby.
Definitely recommend a purchase.

I’m giving Dead Space my vote for ‘Sleeper Hit of the Year’. While other games are getting multi-page print ads and television spots Dead Space will likely fly under many gamers radar in anticipation of hyped titles like Resistance 2, Gears of War 2 or Little Big Planet. Make no mistake though, Dead Space is just as worthy of your time as the more well publicized titles.
The plot of Dead Space is vaguely similar to the movie Event Horizon. You are part of a team sent to the Mining Vessel USG Ishimura. The Ishimura is a “Planet Cracker” class vessel that travels the cosmos harvesting resources from far off planets and asteroids. Something has gone wrong though and communication was lost with the vessel. You are going in as engineer Issac Clarke, part of a team of personnel sent to investigate exactly what has gone wrong on the Ishimura.
Almost immediately things start going wrong. Through a series of events your team will be separated and it’s up to you to help get the ships vital systems back online. You’ll be in constant communication throughout the game with the rest of your team through the use of a video conferencing system built into your survival suit.
From the onset of the game gamers will likely notice the fantastic graphics. In fact the first few minutes of the game while docking with the Ishimura you’re treated to some of the best visuals on the PS3. The game features no Heads Up Display (HUD) of any kind incorporating vital data into the players survival suit. Your health bar is displayed prominently on the back of your suit. Switching weapons is a quick directional button press and ammo reserves are displayed right on the weapon. Access to your inventory system is quick and efficient and also features a functional map display that can be used while still playing the game. In fact the entire menu system is built to be minimalistic and keep the player engrossed in the game. Having a health bar and a mini-map seems out of date after playing Dead Space.
Another great feature is the inclusion of a directional guide that displays when you press R3. At any point should you become disoriented simply press the guide an you’re pointed in the correct direction of travel to your next objective. Given the sheer size and claustrophobic interior of the Ishimura I found myself using the feature often and was glad to have it.
The environment in the game is absolutely spot on. The interior of the ship is grimy and dark much like you’d expect in an actual mine. Machinery onboard the Ishimura is braking down and enemies lie in the many shadows. You’ll spend a good portion of the game trying to get the ships vital systems like communications and life sustainment under control. Each area features enough deviation to keep the game fresh though nothing ever felt out of place.
The sound effects and musical score fit the style of the game perfectly. Enemies will jump out at you around every turn or when your guard is let down. The music will jump right along with your heart, thumping as you run for you life from a pack of grotesque alien life forms. This is a game that is meant to be played alone in the dark. Put the kids to bed, turn down the lights and crank the music.
Controls for Dead Space are tight and slightly reminiscent of Resident Evil 4. The camera is a 3rd person behind the shoulder camera that is rarely obtrusive or out of place. The only times I found the camera slightly frustrating was when fighting multiple enemies approaching from different angles. It seemed like the camera was a bit slow to move at times, though that may have been because of my panic to escape the enemies at hand.
Speaking of enemies, Dead Space features a good variety of alien life forms that want nothing more than to kill whatever is on board the Ishimura. Dead Space, unlike many shooters doesn’t reward the player for a perfectly placed head shot. Instead many enemies continue their attacks even after decapitated. Dead Space encourages the player to rip enemies limb from limb as the primary means of stopping your pursuers. To assist you in that end the game provides you with access to a range of weapons that vary from “Plasma Cutter” to a flamethrower. Each and every weapon is insanely brutal, rendering vast amounts of gore from your enemies.
Another great feature of the game is the ability to upgrade your survival suit and weapons. Using power nodes found in the game game and a specialized machine you’ll be able to apply these power nodes upgrading everything about your weapons from magazine size, reload speed, and damage. Your suit will garner you more and more protection and access to an expanded inventory as you upgrade it. There are various other aspects that can be upgraded including the abilities “Stasis” and “Kinesis”. These abilities allow you to slow enemies and machinery down and well as grab and interact with both respectively. Both play a vital role in your survival and will likely be used often.
In keeping with the high production value, Dead Space also features full support of Sony’s Trophy system. Think of it as an in-game reward for accomplishing tasks of various difficulty.
All in all I highly recommend Dead Space to anyone who is a fan of survival horror games. Though the feint of heart and kids under 17 should probably stay away from this game.

Game kept me on edges throughout. It never lets up which keeps you in suspense all the time. The atmosphere and sound design are really top notch. They compliment the mood perfectly. Enemies are hideous and disturbing. The sounds they make will send shivers up your spine. You will want to kill them quickly.
My only gripes about the game is that the character you control is very emotionless. You actually never really get to see him because he’s in his suit throughout. You will for a short period, but I won’t spoil when. This was probably a design choice to be more immersed in the character. I also would have liked a better melee system, but you probably wouldn’t want to fight that way anyways.
The game overall is a really fun survival horror game. The controls are easy and the different emphasis on shooting is cool. It’s not scary to the point where you want to put the controller down and never play again. It’s in fact the opposite. The game’s really gory and bloody, so you will find yourself stomping on a lot of dead bodies. It’s a real twisted but enjoyable experience.

You get right into the action and terror right from the start. It’s like a fricken movie but your in control of the hero. This game is actually scary and makes you jump right from the beginning. The monsters come out of nowhere and you have to basically walk slowly holding the gun every time you go threw doors and elevators. The weapons are easy to use and the monsters are cool as hell. The voice acting is real and this game is grat as sin. highly recommended.

If you’ve been wanting a true survival horror game then you have to play DeadSpace. DeadSpace is what Resident Evil 4 should’ve been. Resident Evil has slowly become more and more of an action game. This game is actually scary. Make sure to turn the sound up and lights off.
This game has an interesting story, great atmosphere, awesome sound, and is a lot of fun.

This game really is the best survival horror you will play. It puts Resident Evil 5 to shame by allowing you to actually move while aiming while still being actually more terrifying and nerve-wracking than RE5. EA had a surprise hit with this game, and once you play it, you will understand why. I look forward to Dead Space 2, which comes out in January, 2011. I would highly recommend to anybody into the survival-horror genre to buy this game if you haven’t played through it, and look for DS2 in January.

Pros:
graphically this game is perfect.
sound wise perfect.
can jump in any direction in Zero-G perfect.
can’t stop playing Perfect.
Cons:
None ….
Let me start off by saying when i first played RE the first one the game was great. i am very particular about current games i buy. this one i waited for (so i got it at a cheap price). i was very impressed by the time
& work that went into this game. there’s no learning curve & the game play is just what i was looking for.
EA should be proud to have such a creative group of people to work on this game. they put real realism into this very game . i read other reviews for this game a couple got my attention about ( THE ASTEROIDS OF DOOM ) i think
that one particular challenge is challenging . i tried 4 times before i finally got past it, and thank god the save station near by. the lesson is go for the Rocks that are coming at your glass i used only one cannon &
it worked. tried with both but the cannons would over-heat rapidly. the puzzles in the game are challenging as well. i’m older now so i only look for games that don’t take up too much time learn . so in a nut shell if you are looking to purchase this game . be sure to be dazzled & scare at times with impressive graphics & for-boding
music & sounds . i gave this game 5 Stars because this sleeper hit in my book .

Dead Space is one of better games i’ve ever played. it’s original, challenging, gory, and scifi. i’ve been waiting for some kind of a space type of game with gravity physics and futureistic weapons. the game is difficult at first but get’s easier as your able to upgrade weapons and armor. the only negative i would have for this game would be is the fact that you basically a whipping boy and your doing everything. it’s one thing after another and games like that tend to annoy me alot but it’s still a great game. it’s a buy. 9.5 out of 10.

Dead Space is an awesome product. EA really outdid themselves and managed to make a wonderful original property that is a blast to experience. If you like survival horror style games you owe it to yourself to give Dead Space a try. The environments and creepy atmosphere paired with the fantastic ambient sound fx will make you feel the tension. Don’t play it during the day… wait until nighttime, turn off the lights, close the door and you will enjoy the ride. (Assuming you like a good scare.)
Gameplay is great and the implementation of the menu and HUD elements is fantastic. Overall a very solid game. Recommended.

I really loved every minute of this game. Half of the game I played with the lights off and the sound turned up… it will freak you right the f*** out. The other half I played with a friend watching. Some of the battles are so intense that my friend was yelling at the game when I was finally surrounded by a group of alien abominations and torn limb from limb.
That being said, this game can be unforgiving. But in my opinion, that’s what made this game fun. Most of the time I was running around with only a few clips for my little laser cutter gun and suddenly 20 aliens would pop out and start wailing on my face. I was left with no ammo after a skirmish on many occasions.
The controls rock in this game. Everything is responsive and accurate. You won’t die because of the game, you will die because of your own failures.
There’s only one problem with this game, the story progression. The story is strung along by a multitude of equipment failures. Think you just fixed something? Wrong, it isn’t working and there are 10 other things you need to do before it will work. Needless to say it can get repetitive.
Considering how cheap this game is now (under $20) this is a no brainer. Get it.

killer game! in space no one can hear a zombie scream! a must have in any ps3 owners library!

I thought this game was simply amazing! The story is about as standard as they come. You are going to a mining ship that needs repair, then you get attacked by an unknown force. Your job is to survive and rescue your fellow mates and uncover the truth. The atmosphere, music, and overall presentation seem futuristic and scary as anything. The selling point, in my opinion, is the atmosphere. You will be scared all throughout and if you have good sounds, you’re going to love this game (I have a SB X-Fi card with Headphones and I was scared as anything). If I had to compare this to a movie, I thought of Alien(1&2) gone high tech.
There are a few problems with the game. The first one I noticed is some graphical issues with the game. I’m playing it everything on high at 1680×1050. Everything looked beautiful, except when there is flashing lights or fire (I’m running on a gtx260, w/9800gt for phys-x). It seems to “stutter” the screen a bit. If I turned on v-sync it fixes the problem, but presents a problem with the mouse which is the second problem with the game. Normally the mouse is fine, but if you were to aim at enemies, you’d find that the speed is impossibly slow. Not only that, if you turn on v-sync to fix some of the graphical glitches, it goes even slower to a point where you cannot use it.
Overall though, the game is amazing. There are only a few places where there are strobe lights and such, so you can turn v-sync off to up your mouse speed (note that sensitivity doesn’t fix it) and still enjoy a solid game. I know I did.

“In space, no one can hear you scream…”
I did not care for Dead Space. As soon as I saw those first trailers, I thought “Oh no. Ea… making a horror game?” Man, do I need to stop judging games by their trailers… because Dead Space was by far the scariest, and most entertaining game in the genre since the RE remake on the Gamecube. First, the story. Top-notch. They put a lot of work to the writing of this game, because IMO, the story greatly outclasses most modern horror films, or even sci-fi films. I won’t go into detail, since I do not want to ruin the many surprises that will come, but I do have to say this, the story is truly twisted. The graphics are great! Beautifully rendered character models, very realistic backgrounds, and extremely scary atmosphere, the graphics are some of the best seen yet! The gameplay is also a step up in the genre. Since RE 4 took the genre into a third person perspective, Dead Space must be the perfect rendition of the gameplay. The aiming and dismemberment system works wonders, and it is always fun to get into those fights with the enemies. All the weapons feel powerful and balanced, and the enemies, though sometimes repetive, yet scary as hell, never feel too tough, yet they are not a push-over. Overall, this game took me by surprise. It held me at the edge of my seat, and kept me there for a fun and scary ride.
A perfect 5 out of 5.

First off, this game has no installation and that made me very happy. A lot of PS3 games use a big chunk of space on the hard drive and I’m glad this one doesn’t. The graphics are amazing, best visuals and textures i have yet to see on a game. The sound adds that extra punch the game that keeps you on the edge. The story isn’t that catchy but it works. Pretty much your stuck on a space ship while 2 of your other comrades try to hack into the main system. Your two friends volunteer you to go on a cat and mouse chase and have you go all over the ship for different things. It’s the usual go here, go there type of game. You’ll do a lot of back tracking and collecting of different items (cash, health pack, ammo, etc). The “alien” aren’t that much scary or detailed. The aliens are a flesh color and look like zombies with extra arms with hands as blades. I beat the first chapter and half way through the 2nd and the way the aliens look is staying the same, so far. I’m glad i bought this game and thank goodness it has trophies!

Okay, so you’re the lone hero who doesn’t talk, not a soldier (instead engineer), has a long-lost love interest, has lethal mining equipment, is stranded on a metal casket of a ship, and there’s blood hungry alien type things that just killed your squad…in the opening sequence. What did we learn? Apparently, that’s the way to introduce you into a traumatic ‘fight or flight’ hellacious story, is to just literally throw you into it. But this is one of those games where you’re not just screwed repeatedly and have to retry the opening (or any really) sequence over and over. Dead Space does very good work at giving you a tutorial in an intense situation without making you panic…too much. But that’s the point of the game, inducing panic. Almost the entire time you are in some very dark, narrow corridor. The visuals are amazing, even though you can’t see most of anything most the time anyway.
The story is decent but not great, just enough to keep you somewhat interested. You’re stuck pretty much trying to get off the Ishumura (the vessel you’re stranded on) whilst surviving. In the mix of all that, you start uncovering why and how the entire crew of the Ishumura disappeared. And you’re trying to find your lost girlfriend who, don’t ya know, works on the only ship to be overrun by alien lifeforms. Dead Space’s story is relatively simple compared to most other survival-horror types out there, such as: Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Run Like Hell, Extermination, and the like.
The gameplay is simply outstanding, although you’ll feel extremely claustrophobic, you’ll never feel weighed down by lame controls that you’re forced to endure. The controls are very smooth compared to all the other similar games out there, very fluent. There’s the aim and fire, moving freely while aiming, two different melee attacks, a quick-heal shortcut button, sprint, shortcuts for weapons, and strafing. There’s absolutely no HUD either. Not that I’m tired of looking at a fixed corner of text and colored bars, but the no HUD thing frees up a little screen room. Your health, oxygen, and telekinesis bars are located on your back in plain view of you, the player. Your pertinent data screens, such as inventory, maps, notes, special items, etc. are displayed in real time in front of Isaac (your character) as if he was physically looking at the projection himself. Each weapon has 2 firing modes: primary, secondary. And there’s a weapon, armor, and abilities upgrade system along with a store to buy, sell, and store items and ammo.
Sound is key in this game. The reason being is you get most of your environmental cues from sound. Dead Space bests where a lot of games fail in this area. You’ll hear creatures climbing through vents and explosions sound like explosions for example. The best thing about space is that there is absolutely no sound in space and there will instances where you’ll experience this and probably fall in love with it. Or hate it. Up to you.
Now, the prime reason you will love, hate, fear, loath, and appreciate this game is simple: GORE. Gruesome, yet beautiful, the shear amount of blood and guts in game is the more in Dead Space than I’ve seen in the rest of my game library combined. Its truly amazing really. This makes the game. Where Dead Space has any shortcomings, they are all forgiven and overlooked when you make that first blood fountain out of some poor necromorph’s stubs by making it a bilateral amputee. This is the reason we watch horror movies and play shooter games, for the GORE. So join the GORE CORPS by assisting Isaac in his unforgettable endeavor to slice and dice as many unliving creatures as he can.

I rarely give five-star reviews for anything, but DEAD SPACE met and exceeded all my expectations.
IMMERSIVE. I felt a chilling claustrophobia throughout the whole game. I found myself getting tense all over weaving my way through all the closed spaces.
EXPANSIVE. On the other hand, some of the environments were HUGE, especially when I was cruising around outside the spaceship with wide open space floating overhead. Awe-inspiring vistas.
DISTURBING. Some of the monsters were genuinely disturbing to the point of believability. I was truly freaked out by the humanoid things that had the lower jaw missing and an extra arm coming out of the stomach. Plus, the storyline about this fanatical sect really bumps up the urgency and dread.
CINEMATIC. The cut scenes were beautifully rendered, and honestly I felt more like I was playing a movie than a game most of the time.
VISCERAL. Gore, gore, gore. Lots of wonderful, splattery innards.
MUSICAL. The score was well-written and appropriately orchestrated, woven together well with the sound effects and properly placed throughout the whole game. Jason Graves did a brilliant job, and I can’t wait to hear what he does next.
FUN. The visuals, gameplay, horror, storyline all added up to one of the top ten games I’ve ever played.

This game is great played it almost all the way through on 360(then lost time) and it was the most fun i’ve had with any kind of survival horror since Resident Evil 4 or Doom 3. Graphically yes it is far superior to those games but still is its own entity, actually reminds you more of the movie The Thing most of the time. Also the securom when your done can easily be removed with either Avast(prefered) or AVG, though with it, takes a little more tweaking. During the game i never had a single issue with slow downs, internet trouble or just anything in general about my computer didnt change. I have an ASUS G50 Republic Of Gamers Laptop and it runs great. Specs are 4 gigs or RAM, Nvidia Geforce GS 9800M 512mb RAM(supports up to 2 gigs), Intel Centrino 2 Core Duo, Windows Vista x64. So just download one of those anti-virus programs from download.com or wherever and you’ll have no problems what so ever. The only thing i would worry about is playing it on XP, the protection isnt near as good on it, so your a bit more vulnerable on it. Enjoy!
Btw i know PC gaming is slowing dying, but play it on a system like this and watch how it blows PS3 and 360 totally out of the water. Up to 65 or 70fps, compared to 25 or 35:D

I can’t think of anything I didn’t love about this game. It’s gory, nasty, hardcore manic action and at the same time it’s creepy and suspensful to the extreme. I’m blown away by this one, I think it’s one of the best games the 360 has seen yet. Horror fans will love it. Action fans will love it. Shooter fans will love it. People looking for something a bit different will love it. This is a game I’ll play again and again. Maybe with the lights on next time!

I know this review is late, especially since this game was released October, 08. To be honest, I bought this game as a filler between Fallout 3 (awesome) and RE5 (so-so) after reading all the positive reviews. I’ve had more fun playing this game than any other game in a long time. First of all, it looks and sounds great. The visuals are outstanding. It is a survival/horror game that is actually very scary at times, especially at the beginning when you really don’t know what to expect. The spaceship you’re on is dark and creepy and the sounds the ship makes as you’re exploring really add to the atmosphere. The game has a tutorial feature that runs while you’re playing, so you get used to the controls quickly. The story is interesting. The monsters are hideous creatures that require different methods to kill them. You have the ability to use ‘stasis’ which will slow the monsters down, similar to ‘bullet time’. It is a really neat effect. You can also use ‘kinesis’ which will allow you to pick up objects with your mind and throw them at enemies. You can go in to areas with zero gravity, another neat effect. I heartily recommend this game. It has come down in price and you will not be disappointed.

I have nothing against Resident Evil 5. I love that game, but it drops the ball big time in horror. RE 5 made up for its mistakes with high tension throughout the game. However, Dead Space beats RE 5 in the horror category. It achieved origonallity in an industry that is flooded with sequels, prequels, and origin stories. But, it’s biggest achievement is atmosphere. You’ll be trigger happy with anything that moves. You cannot be sure whether what you are seeing is real or not. The sound effects and lighting effects are unbelievable. They really bring the ship to life.
This game was designed from the ground up, with a totally revamped Godfather game engine, which is now known as “The DEAD engine.” The team at Redwood Shores or “Visceral Games” is in my opinion the best team presently working for EA. The guys who designed Fight Night Round 4 are fantastic as well. The gameplay is not all that new. Its basically just like RE 4 & 5, except for some gruesome momements when an ememy graps your character, especialy the necromorph baby. But, the story steals the show here. Its like …. I’m not going to spoil it — so just buy this game.
Overall I give this game five stars for the quallity of the product and 4.5 for the fun factor, because there is a bit of back tracking. By the way, you’re likely to be in awe at the beginning of this game, because graphically this game is in a league of its own.
On a closing note, the guy who gave this game 1 star because he bought it for his son on the wrong system, why write a review hitting the PS3 version? You mucked up by buying the game for your kid on the wrong system. Another thing, how old is your kid? I wouldn’t let a 13 or 14 year old play this game.

I’ve played most of the Resident Evil and Silent Hill games but for some reason this game leaves me very unnerved.
I guess its the combination of being in quiet space, the creepy sounds, blinking lights, bloody bodies everywhere and the way you are suddenly ganged up on all of the time.
You are constantly slowly walking around corners with your fingers on the trigger and at the same time trying to look behind you waiting for someone to come up from behind. The aliens can come through vents or hatches on the floor and there vents everywhere so you are constantly on guard. Like a lot of games the creatures come out from the same places. That’s good if you have to replay that area you have a feel of what to do. The only time you can relax is when you are at a save room or a transition spot where you go to the next level.
Two great features of the game that I really like is that the map shows where the save, recharge, equipment stores and the destination is. the other good feature is that you can summon a path on the floor to give you an idea where to go next. those features are good so you won’t be wasting your time walking around in circles looking where to go next. Many games don’t have those features.
one thing that I don’t like is the speed of turning around. If someone is attacking you from behind they can damage you a couple of times before you can get to them. Other than that the game is pretty solid and has great replay value.
If you want to get the full effect of the game play it in the dark but don’t try to go to sleep right afterwards you get this creepy feeling while your trying to sleep.

Simply put, Dead Space is frighteningly fantastic! I haven’t been this tweaked by a horror game since Doom 3 for the Xbox and F.E.A.R. You literally never know when or where something is going to come at you! Sometimes the game would even throw random sounds (like a large metal pipe hitting the ground and clattering around somewhere in the dark distance) just to mess with you! I would be creeping around completely paranoid cause i heard a sound and there would be nothing …. NOTHING! … then as soon as i start to relax … a “quarantine” or something similar would go into effect, the room would lock down and i would be set upon by a swarm of enemies of same or varying types! O.K. enough of my general exuberations
… on to the facts:
Pros:
.
-Environment: the levels were largely unique and you even revisited the same ones on different missions. This fact matters little, however, due to the fact that even revisited levels would sometimes be “changed” in some way as well as throw newer or different enemies at you than the first time you ventured through. I don’t think there was a single moment in the entire game that i felt “safe” or “secure”. The permanently set “creepy ambience” was integrated into the game wonderfully! I’ve never looked over my shoulder so many times in a game and been so paraniod about every corner and shadow
-Enemy design: I’ll admit that while the enemies did not have a plethora of variation, they were varied enough to keep it more than interesting the entire play through. I feel that there were just enough different enemies to keep you on your toes. Meaning, when you encountered a foe, because there weren’t a WHOLE lot of different ones, you had just enough time to evaluate the TYPE of enemy it was and determine how to engage it without too much deliberation. Therefore strategy played a part in your combat experience but it did not dominated it, giving you a “fight by the seat of your pants” feeling.
-Combat: As a person that primarily plays First-person-shooters, adapting to the 3rd person (Metal Gear Solid) type of gameplay took a little getting used to. However, once I got the hang of it, i must say i like it just as much as an FPS style game. The controls are simple and easy to use as far as aiming, shooting, melee, and switching weapons is involved. Even if an enemy does get the best of you, you can usually button spam to get them off and lay down the hurt on them for crossing your path. Collision detection was phenominal(!) both in normal gravity and ZeroG. Dead enemies and objects reacted in a realistic way when kicked or thrown. Even live enemies knocked aside their dead comrades as they charged forward to rend your head from your body; which in some cases where the lighting was bad, could be enough warning to help you spot some of the smaller aliens. The weapons were interesting as well. Most of them had a slicing or cutting type of fire, and they all had a secondary firing mode. My personal favorite was the pistol type plasma cutter (first gun you get in the game) and the assault rifle which would hold a 200 round clip when upgraded (very good for those long fights with lots of enemies .. who needs to reload?). And while you found a decent amount of ammo laying around and could buy additional supplies from the “Store”, it was very possible to run out of ammo while trying to make it from one cache to the next. I came close several times but never actually depleted my supply. And i’m a “conservative shooter” lol. The fact that your ammo takes up inventory slots that you have a limited number of makes it all that more challenging. (Tip: upgrade your suit as fast as you can
) Those inventory slots are like plutonium to Stewie Griffin … the more you have the more destruction you can rain down upon your enemies
.
-Controls: i mentioned it a little bit in the “combat” section but as far as controls go; they take some getting used to at first, but once you do it feels pretty seamless. I was actually pretty intimidated when i entered a ZeroG room for the first time. Not only did it mean i was going to be able to go ANYWHERE in the room but also that the ENEMIES could come from anywhere also
. I also thought it would be hard to maneuver in ZeroG, but it was as simple as “point and click”. It was just as easy to stand on the ceiling and blast the baddies as it was on solid ground. And i’m not sure if it applies but i’m gonna put it in this section anyway. No HUD! Zero. Nada. None. Your health is located on the spinal part of your suit, your ammo counter pops up for the amount remaining in the current ammo clip for whatever weapon you have equipped when you AIM with it, and as far as your inventory goes, you can move around while you’re sorting through things and it follows where your character is LOOKING, it doesn’t just come up flat on the screen, it turns with you! Overall, it’s a very smooth, very sleek and very tight configuration of data. Once you get familiar with what each type of ammo looks like it only takes a quick glance at your inventory screen to see if u should switch weapons soon or fire away blindly into the hordes of corpse-spawned enemies. One quick, final note i have on controls is that i like the fact you can run in pretty much any direction, strafing and moving backward included. It definitely helps keep u mobile while keeping your enemies in your sights.
-Story: You might think a scary game wouldn’t have too much of a back story to it. Just throw some poor helpless fools into a scary/creepy environment; spawn some demonic/alien/mutated baddies; and let the screaming, flesh-rending, horror commence. Well while it DOES have all that, Dead Space also has a pretty decent storyline. I’m not going to spoil it for anyone, but I will say that things defintely aren’t what they seem (cliche i know but it fits
). In addition, there were at least THREE times i thought the game was over (or about to be over), when instead some random twist of fate threw me right back into the mix! Keep in mind i’m not complaining in the least … but i will say when i DID actually finish the game it FELT like an accomplishment
.
Cons:
-Boss Fights: The boss fights for the most part were straightforward and simplistic … save one. And while it kept the game going with minimal frustration, i feel as though they could have made them SLIGHTLY more complex without hindering progression. Other than the lack of strategy to boss fights though, they were big and epic feeling for the most part. ^_^
-Space Ship Gun minigame: At two different points in the game you will take command of an anti-asteroid laser defense system. The first of which you are actually defending the ship against incoming asteroids. This event was by far the single worst part of the entire game. The aiming controls and actual targeting were simply atrocious. When i first sat down at the controls and the viewport openned to the vastness of space and i looked at the enormous rounds of ammo on either side of the double barrel monstrosity that was an anti-asteroid cannon; all i could think was …. “Hurry up and throw some rocks at me!!! I’ma gonna blast the HECK out of em!” … after three failed attempts and scraping by with only 5% hull integrity the final time all i could think was …. “OMG i hope i never have to shoot that thing again!” While i DID have to shoot it again the second time was not NEARLY as painful. But overall this event was a relatively small stain on the stylish Armani sweater that is Dead Space.
Final comments:
Something i didn’t mention was the vacuum events. The muffled sounds of your weapon discharging and the faint, almost non-existent wails of your alien pray as you sliced your way through their attacks in the cold vacuum of space, felt so real it made me want to hold MY breath lol.
Overal this game gets a big 5 out of 5 stars. Now if you’ll excuse me i’m going to play through again with all the unlocks and continue to upgrade my arsenal

There is no denying that Dead Space is one of the most popular titles available.Sporting an excellent story and well crafted sci-fi/horror action,Dead space has changed the face of action gaming. The story revolves around Isaac Clarke (an engineer) and his team responding to a distress signal from a deep-space mining vessel. However, after “boarding” the ship you encounter hostile aliens known as necromorphs who seperate you from your team and leave you fighting for your life. The gameplay consists of Isaac having to mow down hordes of necromorphs while completing various small objectives.Unique to this series is the exclusive use of mining tools as weapons,an in-game holographic menu system, relocation of the H.U.D. onto the back of the character, use of anti-gravity which is required to complete certain objectives, and the use of (strategic dismembermant) to defeat enemies.Graphically, while the game does have it’s own unique style,it easily rivals recent graphical powerhouses such as Resistance 2.The sound quality and voice acting both earn top marks for their effectiveness in creating a dark and desperate atmosphere. To note, however, like the term (strategic dismembermant) implies, this game is extremely violent and should not be played by children. The story is well written and unfolds quite nicely at a perfect pace. The game locks in at nearly 10 hours for average players and about 6-7 hours for pros.Like a cold glass of water,Dead space delivers a highly refreshing experience. It’s smooth gameplay and sheer originailty make for a highly replayable and thoroughly enjoyable ride for any gamer. 5 star entertainment!

Dead Space is a fantastic and refreshing new game to come out in a long time. The game is like a combination of Bioshock-Resident Evil-Gears of war all combined! If you liked any of those games or all 3 (like I did) then you should do your self a favor and get this game NOW!
It is a wonderful mix of sci-fi horror 3rd person shooter with a great story, plenty of action and gore…..creepy. A good example of the scare tactics used in this game are the wall busters(as I like to call them) you could be all caught up in the moment only to have a creature bust through the vent shaft, ceiling, glass…any where they can and scare the heck out of you! You will get goose bumps(I know, I have) The controls might take a little time for some as there are 2 button combinations for some actions like: LT+A or LT+RB which should not be to difficult to pick up pretty quickly.
The graphics are top notch along with a spooky sound track that you would expect from this type of game. The story is done very well in my opinion and keeps you alert as to what you need to do next. There is a very helpful direction laser as I like to call it, that when activated (Pressing down on the right thumb stick) can show you the direction you need to go, very helpful if you get stuck. There are some zero gravity areas that some gamers might find disorienting a bit, but should not be for most. The is not a game for the faint at heart, be prepared to get scared and have fun at the same time!

This game is simply gripping. Between the horror and the steller graphic you can’t get a better game at this point in time. Althought Fallout 3 comes really close, the simplicty of this game provides a great experience for any player. My favorite part is the stomping feature. Bugs or Aliens can be crawling across the floor toward you as one stomps the ‘bejezzes’ out of it. Try it and I’m sure you’ll like it. One word to describe this gaming experience is “Gory!”

An amazing game, I liked a lot. It has good graphics, a well-told story, I had not played a lot of time with so much emotion and mood … this game reminds me of Dino Crisis and Resident survival. Excellent game 110% recommended.

WOW is all I can say. This is a fantastic shooter that also has strategy elements and some real problem-solving mixed in with it. It’s also the scariest goriest game I’ve played in a long time. On the EASY level it’s easy to pick up the novel game interface; can’t wait to play this again in a harder mode.

…but nope! If this game was like Fatal Frame or Silent Hill, I would’ve been to scared too play.
Why is this game so fun?
-The Storyline (animated episodes on Youtube)-.
1. Sound Effects – The space sound effects are innovative and very sexy. Sleek and state-of-the-art, this is a big reason why I kept playing.
2. Visual Effects – The ingenious weapons and outer space feel has never been so real in this space ship. In particular, I was taken aback in this one scene where I exited the space ship in 0 gravity and watched the water drops float into space. I could hear my in-game heart beat thump in my chest (simultaneously w/ the controller vibration). While the air in my suit was running out, I remember seeing the huge planet in the distance with asteroids floating around, reflected by the sun. It was so, so, so beautiful. You simply cannot imitate that kind of beauty in a painting because with the game you are actually there in a surreal reality.
So how scary is this game?
Well, it’s certainly playable. I’m a girl who hates 1st person shooters and thinks Devil May Cry is scary. I could only play through the first few stages of Silent Hill/Resident Evil with all the lights on b/c it was freaking me out. For some odd reason, this game was just appropriate, and definitely more exciting! YOU are probably the scariest “monster” in the entire game especially with the ultimate weapon, your Boot-of-Death! This is 3rd person shooter by the way.
Have you seen the animated episodes on youtube?
If not, you should watch them. Great storyline not to be missed!

First off, I’m more of an RPG advocate in my preferences simply because, for me, a roleplaying game offers a richer, more in-depth experience. I do play shooters if I want a little bit of mindless fun from time to time, but they don’t hold my attention like, say, Elder Scrolls III or IV. That said, I picked this game up as a distraction due to the fact that I have about 1000 hours invested in Oblivion and wanted a change of pace. I was VERY pleasantly surprised. The people over at EA Redwood Studios earned their money with this sucker.
GAMEPLAY-5 Stars
I read a lot of the other reviews before I wrote this one. Two of the primary complaints were: the game was too short, and the game was too easy. The first time I played through this game, it took me a good 15 hours to complete. For the typical shooter, a game might last about 8 hours. Halo 3 took me all of 5 hours from start to finish. Granted, it didn’t take me as long the next time I played Dead Space, but by then I knew what I was doing. Now, I don’t buy a game just for the pleasure of it kicking my hind end all over the yard, so I found the difficulty level adequate for what the game was trying to accomplish. I have played other games where after twenty minutes I just shook my head and shut off the console because the game itself seemed determined to take out on me whatever frustrations the developers were suffering at the time. This one actually allowed me the chance to see it all the way through. The controls were not at all hard to handle and when something snuck up on me from behind, they allowed me to react quickly enough to save myself from becoming a thin red paste all over the walls. When you kill something, you don’t just clip through it like it no longer existed; you have to actually wade through the bodies lying on the floor. It may make the game a little more grisly, but at least that’s more realistic. The game also takes a slightly different tack on fatalities in that you have to be more precise and sever the creatures’ limbs to take them out instead of just going for body shots. In the boss creature battles, you have to hit specific points on the body to do any damage. The general ambience of the game immersed me completely, and several times, when something jumped out at me from the shadows, I jumped out of the chair. Dead Space is set up on a third-person perspective, but Isaac is centered toward the left side of the screen closer up than normal to promote a more personal feel to the game, so that you feel things are happening to you, not someone else.
The game is also more than just your typical run-and gun. There are areas where there is no gravity and you have to jump from point to point to get where you need to be (and using the Havok physics engine, everything in the game behaves believably, so if you bump into something as you’re sailing through the air from one floor to another, it spins off in another direction), and some of the areas have been depressurized, leaving you only a short amount of time before your air runs out and you asphyxiate. There are two mini-games which place you in the gunner’s seat of one of the ship’s rail cannons and this helps to break up the cycle of wandering around to find the level’s objectives. The obstacles you face also make perfect sense given the nature of the situation, so you don’t find yourself going “Whuh?”. For example, at one point after you repair and reconnect the fuel for the ship’s engines, the Ishimura enters the debris field thrown up from cracking the planet open as it regains a stable orbit. Your next objective is to man one of the ship’s guns in order to destroy oncoming rocks until your team leader can get the automated aiming system back on line. You have to exit one of the airlocks and traverse the hull to the gunnery station. There are air-scrubbing vents (at least I think that’s what they are) that you have to run and duck behind along the path to avoid oncoming boulders. It’s a timed run-and-hide, but it’s something you would expect to do while in that debris field. And keep in mind that the ship is pretty beat up by the time you board it so lots of things are not working right. Trust me, you WANT to avoid those malfunctioning grav plates in the flooring, unless you’re the type of person that likes to slam into the ceiling. Also, the inclusion of ship-wide store kiosks throughout each of the levels adds a depth to the gameplay by allowing you to purchase upgrades for anything from your health to your available air supply when under vacuum conditions to your weapons, beyond the usual ‘push this button, watch that happen and hope you find a better weapon later on’ mindset of the typical shooter.
STORY-5 Stars
At some point in the future, resource mining has become involved enough that entire worlds are dismantled for their mineral resources. You play an engineer named Isaac Clarke, who’s one member of a three-person team (well, there are two other members on the team initially, but the nasties chew them up within the first fifteen minutes). You’ve been assigned to investigate why communication’s been lost with the ISG Ishimura, the first of the planetcracker class of mining vessels with over 62 years of service. Once you come out of shock space (the game universe’s term for faster-than-light travel) into the Aegis system, contact is reestablished, but what the team hears coming out of the speakers is not at all encouraging and things quickly go south from that point. Your shuttle ends up crashlanding on the flight deck and very soon you end up on your own, trying to fix the ship (you ARE an engineer after all) and find out just what the hell is going on. It turns out to be an uphill battle.
This game pays homage in a roundabout way to the ‘Alien’ series of movies. Like that franchise, this game tries to emulate real world demographics taken forward a few centuries. It’s dark. It’s edgy. People don’t necessarily act in a noble fashion while running around in silver lame (lam-ay) jumpsuits. Governments and corporations are greedy and sinister. The Ishimura is ungainly. It’s corridors are dark, ribbed with bulkheads and cluttered with assorted ‘gakk’ that induces a definite feeling of claustrophobia as you wander around. The creatures you fight were once human, but after being infected by whatever has overtaken the ship, they are as alien as anything you might find anywhere else. Even the members of the Ishimura’s crew that have managed to remain unaffected by the alien spoor are not always to be trusted…
GRAPHICS-5 Stars
I don’t know if they contracted with engineers to design the ship, but I’d put money down that they did. The layout of the Ishimura makes perfect sense. There’s everything here that you’d expect to find on a mining ship, and it all gives a convincing illusion of vastness. This ship is HUGE and it all looks old and strictly functional and halfway decrepit (seeing as how the Ishimura is 62 years old and all).
The artwork in this game is also some of the most atmospheric I’ve ever seen. You stare off into the distance through the haze on a level to see a single flood lamp casting shadows over everything, including Isaac. The graphics are as crisp and fresh on the Xbox 360 as it can be, and none of it slows down the framerate. Halls DO hide things that go bump. The gore is a little heavy-handed, but that’s to be expected in a horror game. Just don’t play this if you have a weak stomach. The slime dripping off portions of the walls can have an adverse effect of the average appetite.
The visuals really draw you in; at one point in the game an escape shuttle from the Ishimura is taken in by a military ship which ‘just happens’ to be patrolling the system. The shuttle is carrying one of the infected crew members, which then proceeds to wreak havoc with the soldiers on board. You’re sitting in the seat of one of the gunnery stations, riveted as you watch the military ship approach on your view screen to crash uncontrolled into the Ishimura, while you go “whoah, Whoah, WHOAH, $H/T!!!” as it happens. Or, when you enter the surgery ward on the medical level, one doctor, obviously insane, is working on a corpse, apparently trying to fulfill her duties. She turns to look at you… and then suddenly slits her own throat with an autopsy cutting saw. And let’s not forget the thumping you hear when walking down one dark hall in another stage of the game. You approach a doorway. Just past it is a man banging his head against the glass bulkhead. When you get close enough, he SLAMS his face into the wall, leaving a bloody smear on it before dropping. All of this works to involve you personally in the action.
SOUND-5 Stars
The soundtrack of Dead Space fits the action to the letter. Music starts to play frenetically when something nasty chases after you, and the ambient sound effects are perfect. Lifts grind miserably when you ride them. Doors let out harsh hydraulic hisses when they open. And the engines are LOUD when they fire up. All one more piece of an awesome puzzle.
REPLAY-5 Stars
Granted, the ship and the situations you face in it are the same when you play the game the next time around, but the ambience still serves to draw you in. I’m not the type of guy that watches a movie once or plays a game a single time and then gives it away. I get something out of a game each time I play it. In Dead Space, I’ve noticed other little details that I didn’t before the first time I went around. You can also save your game after the ending credits, which grants you bonus items on a replay, so it isn’t just a same ol’, same ol’ type of situation. The downloadable content from XBOX Live gives you nice little perks, so you do get something out of the game each time around. And if you want to become more involved in the universe the game is based in, check out the Electronic Arts website. There’s an animated movie (Japanese manga style) available there, among other bennies, as well as a novel based on the setting.
OVERALL-5 Stars
Since Sega announced that they were pulling the funding for both the ‘Aliens: Colonial Marines’ shooter and the ‘Aliens Roleplaying Game’, I had originally reconciled myself to settling for this as my second choice horror/sci-fi game pick. Now, after playing through it a couple of times, I can only hope that, if both of the former games ever get put back onto the front burner, they can measure up to this masterpiece. Two thumbs up.

This game is awesome and is even better with the fact that it has a low price tag of $20. Don’t know where to begin, but this game is packed full with fun treats. Revisiting the game is a delight because of the added benefits you receive when finishing the game once through. This game is a must get and play.

I was a little skeptic about trying this game out, but I am glad I did. Once you start playing you can’t stop. It is also fun to play multiple times. The story line, visual and sound effects can be a little creepy when played for the first time. I would highly recommend buying this game.
Update: Be careful with description on Amazon it is inaccurate. This is not the original version as stated on picture, but the Platinum/Greatest Hits version. No change on gameplay just box art and disc states it it part of the Platinum/Greatest Hts Collection.
